This week I wanted to highlight a remix by Chilean beatmaker Denom (aka DNM) of a classic hip-hop track from the 90's : How many Emcees by Black Moon.

Adding a smooth jazy keyboard line, Denom reinvents this powerful song and gives it a sweet R&B's touch.

V4YS EP Review - Black Jukebox 05 EP (Exploited Records)

Here is a little gem from Berlin-based Exploited label.
Gathering tracks from James Silk, Patryk Molinari, Andre Crom, and Darabi, the EP is a nudisco & slo-mo house delight with a funky edge in the form of irresistible beats and soulful samples.

Pump up the bass volume and enjoy the couple of extracts below (ans see if that amazing sample loop in the middle of the track Can't Wait by James Silk doesn't transport you in a joyful state of euphoria !)

V4YS LP Review - The XX - Coexist (Young Turks)

I'll be quick on this one as it has obviously been reviewed on most (good) music sites. Still, I have to mention uk indie band The XX second LP Coexist as it's clearly my favorite electro-indie-pop record of 2012.

Even more minimalist than their georgeous first self-titled album, Coexist is a mysterious bag filled with poetic melancholy. The voices of Romy Madney Croft and Oliver Sim sound always more intimate and intense, while Jamie XX's production talent makes the rest...even managing to include a hint of dreamy steel drums (Reunion) reminiscent of his own brillant solo productions. Massive record !

V4YS Album Review - Future Classic DJs Compilation (Future Classic Records)

Let's stay in the slo-mo & deep house space with a very good compilation of previously unreleased tracks & remixes from the great artists line-up of Sydney-based label Future Classic.

From Flume, to Mario Vidis, Tigerskin or Jeremy Glenn, this Future Classic DJs LP is already an essential part of my own DJ toolkit. Offering both sensual and funky cuts, it is an almost faultless selection from a label definitely on the rise.

On reste aujourd'hui dans l'univers slo-mo/deep House avec une très jolie compilation d'inédits des producteurs du label australien Future Classic.
Flume, Mario Vidis, Tigerskin ou encore Jeremy Glenn alternent les titres sensuels ou plus funky et font de ce Future Classic DJs un étendard de qualité pour représenter un label qui a clairement le vent en poupe.

V4YS Album Review - DJ Steef - Sortilèges (Gazeebo International Records)

Marseille-based DJ Steef (aka Fred Berthet, also known for being part of the Troublemakers) is one of my favorite "edits-maker".
Always picking great old-schools cuts,  he then reworks them through his irresistible groovy slo-mo house prism.
After several Edits-only EPs, here comes a first album on the always prescient Gazeebo International label focusing on his own compositions.

Starting in the 100/110bpm range, truthful to the slo-mo spirit, he slowly but surely speeds up the pace to finally cross the 120bpm line...entering the progressive House space.
From the warm-up to the night's hotter moment, this 8-tracks long album is built like a good DJ Set !

Le marseillais d'adoption DJ Steef (aka Fred Berthet, qu'on connait aussi pour être l'un des trois Troublemakers) est un de mes "edit-makers" favoris. Choisissant avec un flair certain des pépites old-school, il les revisite avec talent en y ajoutant son irrésistible touche slo-mo house.
Le voilà qui nous revient sur l'excellent label Gazeebo International avec ses propres compositions réunies dans un excellent album intitulé Sortilèges. Fidèle à son approche slo-mo, le disque démarre sur un rythme 100/110 bpm pour lentement mais surement monter en cadence et flirter avec une House progressive à la fois sensuelle et groovy. Un disque construit comme un bon DJ-Set, passant du warm-up aux heures plus chaudes de la nuit...

Vibes4YourSoul Loves Edits#4 - Bailey & Bridges - Come And Get It (Nicolas Jaar Edit)

For the 4th stage of our Vibes4YourSoul Loves Edits series I picked a classic 80's groove track from Bailey & Bridges that received the Nicolas Jaar's in 2010.

A slower tempo, a classy broken beats touch, and you get a brand new Come And Get It, respectful of the original's groove while decisively fresh.

V4YS EP Review - José James - It's All Over Your Body EP (Blue Note)

It seems José James forthcoming LP No Beginning, No End will be released on Blue Note in early 2013 instead of end 2012 as I originally thought. Anyway, to calm our nerves, here comes a first splendid EP !

Gathering the studio versions of It's All Over Your Body and Trouble, that we discovered live a few months ago through his great All-Saints Basement Sessions, it also offers a couple of lo-fi/hip-hop remixes from Dj Spinna and Oddisee and a beautiful acoustic duo with singer Emily King.

Starring Robert Glasper on piano/keyboards, his friend Chris "Daddy" Dave on drums as well as the legendary bassist and producer Pino Palladino the EP is an absolute delight.

V4YS EP Review - Axel Malé - Revolucionaria EP

Here is a refreshing underground hip-hop production coming from Barcelona, Spain.


First solo EP of MC Axel Malé, Revolucionaria is the fruit of his collaboration with catalan beatmakers Quirogua, Jim B, Jay Calabria and ALTERfix.

Released on their alternative artistic platform Invisibiles Al Radar the EP blends soulful abstract beats with Axel's infectious vocal flow. No doubt this young artist should be added on your own musical radar !

V4YS Album Review - The Rongetz Foundation - Brooklyn Butterfly Session (Heavenly Sweetness Records)

Fancy the explosive nu-jazz sound of Erik Truffaz or Roy Hargrove's RH Factor? Then The Rongetz Foundation is made for you!

Through this project created almost 6 years ago, French trumpetist Stéphane Ronget regularly gathers various high-profile musicians to live recording sessions flirting with the shores of modern jazz, nu-soul & groove.

For Brooklyn Butterfly Session, the outfit's fortcoming third LP , Stéphane set-up a true dream team in New-York, where he now resides. From singer Gregory Porter (whose recent LP Be Good  will for sure be part of our 2012 favorite picks) to the RH Factor's mesmerizing keyboard player & vocalist Renee Neufville or veteran latin jazz sax player Ronnie Cuber, the line-up spells talent and diversity.

The result of their happy "musicstorming" is a radiant record where energetic grooves (Go-Go Soul, A Composer Of Modern Day, The Braggart) alternate with sensual moments (Eunice K) and inspired Jazz cuts (Hard Bop Merry Go Round, and my favorite track, the instrumental version of Bolshoi Drunk Ghost). A true delight released this  week on the excellent Paris-based label Heavenly Sweetness !

Créé il y a environ 6 ans par le trompettiste français Stéphane Ronget, le projet permet à ce musicien touche-à-tout de rassembler autour de lui des artistes hors-pairs pour des sessions studios explosives naviguant entre nu-jazz, groove ou nu-soul.
Pour l'enregistrement à New-York de Brooklyn Butterfly Session, troisième opus de l'aventure, Stéphane a rassemblé une véritable dream-team. On y trouve entre autres le chanteur Gregory Porter (dont le sublime album Be Good fera à coup sur partie de ma sélection best-of 2012), la pianiste et chanteuse Renée Neufville que l'on peut admirer depuis des années au sein du RH Factor, ou encore le vétéran saxophoniste latin jazz Ronnie Cuber, qui a du jouer avec tout ce qui se fait de mieux sur la planète Jazz depuis une quarantaine d'années. 
De ce joyeux mélange est né un disque lumineux parsemé d'irrésistibles vibrations grooves (Go-Go Soul, A Composer Of Modern Day, The Braggart) de passages plus sensuels (Eunice K) et de voyages nu-jazz inspirés (Hard Bop Merry Go Round, ou mon titre favori, l'instrumental de Bolshoi Drunk Ghost).

Vibes4YourSoul Loves Edits#2 - Donny Hathaway - The Ghetto (Suonho Reloved Edit)

Italian DJ & producer Suonho (aka Tommaso Berardocco) currently is one of my favorite "Edits maker".
His recent Brazilian and Latin remixes of several classic songs are on heavy rotation during my DJ sets but he's also very good at giving a dancefloor edge to some great Soul classics. So for our 2nd weekly "edit post", here is one of his best rework to date, an irresistibly groovy edit of Donny Hathaway's eternal song The Ghetto.

If you also love War's song The World Is A Ghetto and the famous George Benson's cover, well Suonho also edited them both for Gamm Records, another must-have!

Probably one of the best nu-jazz song of these last couple of years, the now-turned-anthem 1960 What? from Gregory Porter was already brillantly revisited by three different house producers last year (Opolopo, Peas & Phil Horneman).

But the track keeps giving ideas and here comes a great new remix from Italian musician, DJ & producer Gerardo Frisina who gives a joyful latin house touch to the track, courtesy opf the crew at SoulAndJazz.com !

As a DJ there is nothing I love more than digging great edits, whether they revisit old-school disco/funk classics, hip-hop & nu-soul cuts or contemporary electronic or pop music.

If I regularly highlight my discoveries through the various mixes & podcasts I make for the blog, I thought it would be cool to bring to your attention one specific Edit per week.

So let's start this Vibes4YourSoul Loves Edits Series with a brand new treat from Berlin-based producer Hannes Fisher who recently reworked a beautiful song from one of my favorite folk songwriter, Bon Iver.

En tant que DJ il n'y a rien qui me fasse plus plaisir que de dénicher de bons Edits. 
Relectures de classiques disco/funk, de morceaux hip-hop/nu-soul ou remixs de titres electro, rock ou pop, c'est toujours un vrai moment de bonheur que de tomber sur une perle rare qui conserve l'esprit d'origine d'une oeuvre tout en y posant un oeil neuf.
Si je partage sur le blog mes découvertes en incluant régulièrement des edits au sein des mixs ou podcasts que je vous propose, j'ai pensé que ce serait bien de mettre en lumière un edit particulier par semaine dans une nouvelle rubrique.
On démarre donc cette série simplement intitulée Vibes4YourSoul Loves Edits avec la relecture de Perth, l'un de mes titres favoris du songwriter Bon Iver par le producteur Berlinois Hannes Fisher qui fait pendre un virage minimal au folk mélancolique de Justin Vernon.
