Leon Vynehall - Music For The Uninvited (3024 Records)
It had been a while since I truly fell for a deep house record. Brighton-based producer Leon Vynehall changed that, with his new EP Music For The Uninvented, out a few weeks ago on Martyn's label 3024 Records.
Finely crafted beats, addictive short vocals chorus, looped to infinity, ultra-deep synths waves...all the right ingredients are there. As enjoyable to set the pace of a weekly run than during a "loungy" mix session, this EP actually resembles more a mini-LP, with 7 cohesive tracks of equal quality.
A couple of extracts below:
A couple of extracts below:

GoGo Penguin - V2.0 (Gondwana Records)
There are so many great sounds coming out the Uk (nu)jazz things these days!
In the wake of the mighty Cinematic Orchestra, artists like Portico Quartet, Submotion Orchestra, Matthew Halsall, Zara McFarlane or Peter Edwards have been delighting me these last few months with incredibly creative productions. Latest case in point, with Manchester trio GoGo Penguin sophomore LP, V2.0, out on the excellent label Gondwana Records.
GoGo Penguin is the meeting of a forceful rhythm machine (led by drummer Rob Turner and bassist Nick Blacka) and the soothing melodie source floating from Chris Illingworth's piano.
From classic jazz constructions, to electro/drum'n'bass-influenced architectures, this new LP is a poster child of the fascinating intensity of the contemporary Jazz scene accross the Channel.
Extract below:

Recorded in 2008 in Ny, it gathers previously unreleased versions of some of his greatest songs. Judging by the first extract, a moving version of Alien (Hold On To Your Dreams), this limited edition pack should be an easy sell.

Paisley - Beach Holiday
Let's stay in sunny Sydney, simply moving to the instrumental hip-hop side of the city, to enjoy Paisley's Beach Holiday.
Cosy beats, beautiful Jazzy samples...just what I crave for! If you enjoy this one, treat yourself for more by exploring his Soundcloud page.
A few extracts below, with a nice Sade rework to finish:

Robert Glasper Experiment - Live In Paris, La Cigale (130314)
So here is another quick post on Robert, Derrick Hodge, Casey Benjamin and Mark Colenburg to mention their latest beautiful live act in Paris last Thursday. Centered around the recent Black Radio 2 LP, this gig also gave them the opportunity to share the stage with another high profile voice of the R&B scene, Raheem DeVaughn.
If their wicked Jazz/Soul/Groove recipe is now well known, they somehow keep making it tastier. Starting with stunning versions of their brilliant studio compositions, adding some massive classic jazz/soul roots tributes (Bill Withers' Lovely Day cover), having fun revisiting some contemporary electro/pop tunes (Daft Punk's Get Lucky got jazzier once again) or offering an ultra-groovy version of Raheem DeVaughn's hit Woman.
So I'm afraid I'm not done harassing you with the Glasper galaxy anytime soon...but I'm sure these little video extracts will help explain my musical obsession!
Come on, Let It Ride, and try to resist the insanely warm Rhodes lines starting around 7'30'':
Then will you get some Raheem DeVaughn magic? "Oh Yeah!"
Enough to have a Lovely Day ?

The Peter Edwards Trio - Safe And Sound
While recommending you UK jazz singer Zara McFarlane latest LP a few weeks ago, I mentioned the impressive contribution of a young pianist named Peter Edwards. Now making a name for himself, Peter's trio is releasing on March 31st a radiant debut LP, Safe and Sound.
If you're into energetic and soulful jazz, then this one is for you. Supported by a hectic rhythmic section (Max Luthert on bass, Moses Boyd on drums), Peter gives full sway to his flamboyant, albeit delicate, piano play. Get ready for some furious swings!
Full preview below, LP available on March 31st on his Bandcamp page.
