Snowy/rainy Paris at the moment, in need of sunshine, so here comes a new cover from Roy Ayers's classic, by one of my favorite bass music producer, Machinedrum.

V4YS Album Review - Bonobo - Black Sands Remixed (Ninja Tune)

Beautifully blending his producer's unique downtempo universe with shades of UK bass music and hints of nu-soul, Bonobo's fourth LP Black sands received a much deserved praise in 2010 following its release on Ninja Tune.

24 months later the always prescient label revisits this reference record with a remixed version gathering some of the electronic music scene's most groundbreaking producers.
Floating Points, Machinedrum, Mark Pritchard, FaltyDL, just to name a few, offer us their interpretations of the original LP with a particular emphasis on the single Eyesdown which revealed at the time singer Andreya Triana.

Dubstep, house, broken and abstract beats, the spectrum of styles present in this remixed edition is wide and not only is a remarkable extension of Bonobo's work but also a perfect snapshot of some of the most innovating parts of the current electro world.

V4YS Ep Review - Machinedrum - SXLND Ep (LuckyMe)

One of the most unpredictable electronic music producers around, Travis Stewart feels as good working on a dubstep track than he does producing downtempo, house or more abstract beats.

One thing is certain though, whatever the style, his releases have consistently been of the highest quality whether under his Machinedrum project (with the Room(s)  LP recently part of our 2011 Favorites Records list) or his Sepalcure duo.

His new EP as Machinedrum, titled SXLND and out on LuckyMe is another great electronic music kaleidoscop ranging from dubstep sounds (SXLND, Van Vogue) to deep tech vibes (No Respect) or underground house (DDD).

Il est certainement l'un des producteurs electro les plus imprévisibles du moment. Aussi à l'aise lorsqu'il s'agit de produire un dubstep novateur que dans des univers plus house voir downtempo et abstract beats, Travis Stewart n'aime pas les cases. Et il a bien raison tant ses productions sont systématiquement de grande qualité que ce soit sous sa casquette Machinedrum (dont l'album Room(s) fait partie de notre sélection 2011) que sous celle du duo Sepalcure.
Son nouveau maxi en tant que Machinedrum s'intitule SXLND et vient de sortir sur le label LuckyMe. Véritable kaléidoscope sonore il nous propose deux perles dubstep (SXLND, Van Vogue), un titre envoûtant que je qualifierais de deep techno (No Respect) et une petite bombe d'underground house (DDD).

V4YS Album Review - Machinedrum - Room(s) (Planet Mu Records)

Machinedrum. Here is an artist name that sums up pretty well his musical approach.
If the man behind the alias, Travis Stewart, has already produced several records under other projects,  his first LP as Machinedrum, out on Planet Mu Recordings, is effectively an ode to the art of electronic percussions.
Room(s) definitely belongs to the currently hot dubstep/bass music sphere, but Travis adds his own twist by turning the rythmic backbone of his music into a kind of science. Using the widest range of drums & percussions samples you may think of, he designs some fascinating beats going from dark & heavy drum&bass to delicate deep dubstep.
Dressing up the drums, a myriad of phenomenal short vocal samples, reworked and autotuned to infinity, as well as various beautiful layers of synths adding a deep and soulful touch to the ensemble.
After this delicious orgy of rythms, the melancholic track closing the album is actually beatless. Titled Where Did We Go Wrong? it makes me want to answer Machinedrum : with this perfect LP you certainly did not go wrong anywhere!

Machinedrum. Une fois n'est pas coutume voilà un nom de scène qui résume à lui seul assez bien l'approche musicale du project qu'il désigne. Room(s), publié sur le label Planet Mu Recordings, et premier album de Travis Stewart avec sa casquette Machinedrum est en effet une sorte d'ode à l'art des percussions numériques.
Si l'on classera sans aucun doute ce disque au rayon de la très active scène dubstep/bass anglo-saxonne, Travis innove par son travail poussé sur les beats en utilisant une variété de samples de batterie et percus qui dépasse l'entendement. A la clé des ambiances rythmiques épatantes allant de la drum&bass au deep dubstep. 
Pour habiller le tout il utilise avec maestria pléthore de mini-samples vocaux, auto-tunés jusqu'à plus soif, ainsi que de somptueuses nappes de synthés, le tout créant des atmosphères à la fois deep & soulful.
Après cette orgie de rythmes, le superbe morceau mélancolique qui clôture l'album ne contient aucun beat. Une pirouette de plus et un titre, Where Did We Go Wrong?, qui donne envie de répondre à l'artiste : nulle-part, ce disque est parfait!
