V4YS EP Review - Julio Bashmore - Au Seve EP (Broadwalk Records)

After a phenomenal 2011 year which saw him accumulating faultless releases, Julio Bashmore is finally taking some time of the decks to offer us another hint of his producing talent while also inaugurating his own label Broadwalk Records.

Starting with Au Seve, a splendid dancefloor cut lost between 90's Chicago sound and current London bass music atmosphere, the EP goes on with Troglodytes, a beautiful deep house track with a strong soulful flava.
And then comes the UFO of the record, a 12-mn-long ride through shades of 80's soul and new-jack blended with futuristic grooves. An absolute delight...and an essential record from one of the most creative house producer of our time!

Après une année 2011 incroyable qui l'a vu enchainer les maxis impeccables et s'imposer comme l'un des producteurs House les plus créatifs de sa génération, Julio Bashmore s'est fait attendre cette année, trop occupé qu'il est à jouer aux quatre coins du monde. Il a enfin pris le temps de se poser et nous offre avec ce Au Seve EP une production une nouvelle fois époustouflante, meilleur moyen d'inaugurer son propre label Broadwalk Records.
Le disque démarre avec le titre éponyme Au Seve, petite bombe dancefloor qui rappelle le son 90's Chicago avec une pointe de bass music londonienne. Vient ensuite Troglodytes dans un registre plus Deep House mais avec encore une saveur soulful très old-school. Enfin le véritable OVNI de ce disque, le track 3, ballade de 12mn qui méandre entre Soul et New Jack encore une fois très 90's et un groove très futuriste. Une petite merveille aussi déroutante qu'envoûtante.
Un disque essentiel qui confirme l'immense talent de ce producteur qui n'a pas fini de nous surprendre !

Koreless - Lost In Tokyo Ep (feat. Jacques Greene) - Vase Records

Third release of Glasgow-based Koreless, third release of canadian producer Jacques Greene's new label Vase Recordings and third collaboration between these two artists (after Vase's inaugural production Concealer Ep earlier this year as well as the now classic Another Girl Ep last year) this Lost In Tokyo EP is a wonderful journey between the worlds of ambient, deep dubstep and deep techno. 


Starting with the title track from Koreless, an almost beatless melancholic cut featuring incredibly dreamy synths, the Ep then reveals its dancefloor side with another incredible Jacques Greene remix that keeps the deep spirit of the original track while spicing it up with dubstep/tech beats that are just irresistible.

Troisième maxi du producteur écossais Koreless, troisième sortie du label Vase créé récemment par le canadien Jacques Greene, et troisième collaboration entre les deux artistes (après le maxi inaugural du label Concealer Ep cette année et le maintenant classique Another Girl en 2011) ce Lost In Tokyo Ep nous emmène aux frontières de l'ambient, du dubstep et de la deep techno.
Le titre original de Koreless, très planant, ne comporte quasiment aucun beat et brille avant tout par la volupté de ses nappes de synthés. Jacques Greene en garde ensuite la deepness tout en l'habillant pour le dancefloor gràce à une rythmique imparable. Une remarquable production !

V4YS Concert Review - Roy Hargrove RH Factor - Live In Paris, New Morning - 180712

It's already mid-july but yesterday only was the first relatively decent hot summer day of an otherwise rainy year in Paris !
Coincidence or not, the temperature just rose even more in the evening thanks to Roy Hargrove and its RH Factor band who started a series of three consecutive gigs at the New Morning club.

If I was not surprised by a relatively classic playlist focusing on their 2003 and 2006 LPs, I was once again mesmerized by their ability to sublimate the many shades of groove. 


From funk to nu-soul, from hints of hip-hop to smooth R&B, they know it all and take an obvious pleasure to take their audience from one spot to the next. 

Add to that a real "collective" approach leaving ample room for each of these world-class musicians to express themselves through devastating solos (with a special mention to Todd Parsnow at the guitar and the unbelievable nu-soul vocal solo from drummer Jason J.T. Thomas) and you understand why they undoubtedly are one of the must-see contemporary live jazz/funk combo.

V4YS Ep Review - Alexis Davis - 3 EP (Expansions Collective)

I have been regularly highlighting the quality abstract/jazzy hip-hop productions of Manchester-based producer Mecca:83 (also known for his other alias Rise). 


The talended young man is now launching another exciting new project with fellow british beatmaker Simon S, and a couple of americans artists : producer Spinnerty and MC Replife. 


The crew is launching a digital label/platform named Expansions Collective that should definitally be added to your watchlist. At the same time they are creating Alexis Davis, a musical project that sees them adding up their skills.


And guess what? the first EP, titled "3" inaugurating both the label and the Alexis Davis band is close to perfect ! 
Groovy beats, jazzy basslines, beautiful trumpet, sax and piano samples, faultless flow from Replife on 3 and The Lift and a kind of Pharoah Sanders tribute on the last track Alexis Davis Theme, all make up for one of the very best hip-hop record I've heard in months. 
Will be part of my 2012 favorites four sure !

J'ai régulièrement souligné sur le blog les excellentes  productions abstract/jazzy hip-hop du producteur mancunien Mecca:83 (dont on connait aussi l'autre nom d'artiste Rise). 
Il nous revient avec un nouveau projet ambitieux qui le voit s'associer avec un autre britannique, le beatmaker Simon S et deux américains : le producteur Spinnerty et le MC Replife.
A la clé deux initiatives qui méritent toute votre délicate attention : un label digital nommé Expansions Collective et un nouveau projet musical intitulé Alexis Davis qui est en fait l'addition des talents de ces 4 artistes. Inaugurant en même temps ces deux nouvelles aventures, le maxi 3 est un quasi sans-faute.
Rythmique groovy, lignes de basses venues du jazz, magnifiques samples de trompette, sax ou piano, flow imparable de Replife sur les titres 3 et The Lift, et hommage plus ou moins déguisé au saxophoniste Pharoah Sanders sur le dernier morceau Alexis Davis Theme, n'en jetez plus, tout y est ! Et voilà sans aucun doute l'une des meilleures productions hip-hop qu'il m'ait été donné de découvrir ces derniers mois.

V4YS Concert Review - Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Festival, Sète, France - July2012

Back from sunny Sète with the head full of great sounds heard during the seventh edition of Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Festival ! 

Matthew Halsall Trio

For those not familiar with this event, it's a unique opportunity to see  a world-class line-up of artists during a 5-day window, ranging from the jazz world to the most futuristic electro sounds. 
A kind of condensed version of the outstanding Worldwide Radio Show Gilles has been hosting for years on the BBC airwaves...with the extra help of the sunshine, the already hot Mediterranean sea as well as the splendid former-fort-turned-theater of the lovely city of Sète !

Robert Glasper Experiment, Portico Quartet, Matthew Halsall Trio, Tinariwen, Little Dragon, Electric Wire Hustle, Gang Colours, as well as a wide range of outstanding DJs like Four Tet, Lefto or Julio Bashmore to name just a few, the program was once again phenomenal and allowed the cosmopolitan audience to travel through a myriad of musical atmospheres.

As far as I'm concerned I'm still under the bewitching influence of the immensely creative DJ Set from Four Tet, the joyful and energetic gig from Little Dragon and the sweetness and spirituality of Matthew Halsall's trumpet.






Well you probably got it, this festival is an essential artistic experience opening the minds, warming the hearts, in a word it should almost be mandatory !

V4YS Concert Review - José James - Live at Duc des Lombards, Paris - 020712

For any nu-jazz/nu-soul fan, José James's forthcoming third solo LP titled No Beginning, No End certainly is one of the most awaited new record of 2012 ! 


Featuring a phenomenal list of guests, it will be released in a few months. While he already revealed a couple of extracts a few months ago through a live session, the best way to get warmed up in the meantime is to catch him on stage either in an intimate jazz club or a hot summer festival.

I was lucky enough to see him yesterday at the cosy Duc des Lombards club in Paris where I could once again enjoy his unique style, brillantly bridging the classic jazz era with the nu-soul world. 


On a quartet formation (drums, bass, piano, trumpet) he alternated between new tracks and songs from his reference LPs, The Dreamer and Blackmagic. His ability to mix a wide range of singing styles coupled with his natural class made a killing yesterday but so did the talent of his musicians whom he leaves ample room to digress and offer brillant solos.

Special mention to his trumpet player Takuya Turoda and his long-time drummer Richard Spaven (who should by the way release soon a second solo album after his brillant first record Spaven's 5ive).

Le troisième album solo de José James intitulé No Beginning, No End est l'un des disques nu-jazz/nu-soul les plus attendus de l'année. En attendant sa sortie probablement à l'automne, le meilleur moyen de se mettre l'eau à la bouche est d'aller voir ce chanteur hors-pair sur scène dans l'intimité de petits clubs de jazz ou la chaleur d'un festival d'été.
Ce fut la première option pour moi hier à l'occasion de sa venue à Paris au Duc des Lombards où il nous a offert un remarquable récital en formation quartet. Conjuguant à merveille via ses multiples variations au chant l'âge d'or du jazz et la sphère nu-soul contemporaine, José prend visiblement un plaisir énorme à roder son nouveau disque en compagnie d'un nouveau groupe au sein duquel on ne retrouve que le fidèle batteur Richard Spaven et où l'on peut découvrir le subjuguant trompettiste japonais Takuya Turoda.

V4YS EP Review - And the Giraffe - Darling (Reprise) (Magic Man Cover)

A few months ago I highlighted Something For Someone the first self-produced EP from a young american folk duo named And The Giraffe.

Nick Roberts and Josh Morris are now back with a couple of sweet surprises !


First a brillant new single titled Darling (Reprise) which sounds more "electro-pop" than their previous songs while carrying the same moving melancholic vibe. You can listen and download it for free on their Bandcamp Page.

Second, this single actually being a cover, it made me discover its original author, a promessing american dreamy pop band named Magic Man. The song is part of Real Life Color a recommended LP that the group recorded 2 years ago nowhere else than in the beautiful countryside of France ! You can listen and downlaod it on their Bandcamp page as well.

Il y a quelques mois je vous mentionnais Something For Someone, très bon premier maxi auto-produit du duo folk américain And The Giraffe.

Cette chanson étant en fait une reprise, elle nous permet de (re)découvrir par la même occasion Magic Man, jeune groupe américain de "dreamy pop" dont je recommande l'album dont est extrait la version originale de Darling (Reprise). Enregistré il y a deux ans aux quatre coin de la campagne...française, Real Life Color est disponible en écoute et download sur la page Bancamp du groupe.

V4YS EP Review - Modlee & Vlooper - Sunwalk EP (Soulection)

Here is a mesmerizing futuristic soul EP from Montreal-based duo Modlee & Vlooper courtesy of US-based underground artistic platform Soulection.

Starting with a cool abstract hip-hop cover of Bilal's recent hit All Matter, the EP then goes on with four groovy tracks where Modlee's radiant voice sometimes echoes Erykah's while Vlooper's beats, keyboards and various sound effects are practically perfect in every way.

Special big-up to the Sunwalk track feat. Kenlo which is a splendid interpretation of one of my favorite jazz song, Norman Connors and Dee Dee Bridgewater's legendary Love From The Sun also made famous by Roy Ayers.

Direction le Canada et Montréal en particulier où réside le duo Modlee & Vlooper qui vient de produire pour la plateforme artistique alternative américaine Soulection un remarquable maxi de Soul futuriste.
Démarrant par une jolie cover abstract hip-hop du récent hit de Bilal All Matter, le disque propose ensuite 4 morceaux particulièrement groovy ou la voix rayonnante de Modlee n'est pas sans rappeler madame Badu alors que les beats, nappes de claviers et divers effets sonores de Vlooper frôlent quant à eux la perfection.
Mention spéciale au titre Sunwalk (featuring Kenlo) qui est une relecture splendide d'une de mes chansons jazz préférées, le classique Love From The Sun de Norman Connors and Dee Dee Bridgewater aussi rendue célèbre par Roy Ayers.

Antibalas - Sare Kon Kon (new track from forthcoming album)

They're back !

Five years after their last LP, Brooklyn-based combo Antibalas will release a new album on August 7th on the always prescient Daptones Records label.

The band I consider as the best contemporary afrobeat act (alongside both Kuti brothers) should also start touring again thereafter which is such an exciting perspective as I miss so much their crazy live shows !

Frontrunning the forthcoming LP, here is a first extract courtesy of Daptones. The track titled Sare Kon Kon will be familiar to anyone who has already seen them live as they used to perform it regularly on stage.

5 ans aussi après la sortie de leur dernier album, après avoir participé au succès de la comédie musicale sur Fela et développé divers projets solos, les musiciens du combo Antibalas sont de retour! La bande de Brooklyn sortira un nouveau disque le 7 août prochain sur l'incontournable label new-yorkais Daptones Records. 
Ceux que je considère comme le meilleur groupe afrobeat contemporain (avec les deux frères Kuti bien sur) devraient dans la foulée entamer  une nouvelle tournée, évènement que j'attends avec beaucoup d'impatience tant leurs concerts survitaminés me manquent.
En attendant le label nous offre un premier extrait. Le titre Sare Kon Kon devrait rappeler quelques souvenirs à quiconque les a déjà vu en live car il faisait parti de leur répertoire scènique avant leur break.

V4YS EP Review - K15 - Note To Self#2 (Fear is the anthithesis of growth)

If you're a regular reader of this blog you know I love to highlight the work of independent artists/producers who try hard to deliver quality sounds.
Today I suggest you pay close attention to the work of UK-based beatmaker K15.

He just released a new beautiful insrumental hip-hop single titled Note To Self#2 (Fear is the anthithesis of growth) and is also the author of several great nu-soul/jazzy hip-hop remixes that you can find on his Bandcamp page.

His remarkable work on sound textures, the variety of his drums samples as well as his talent for post-production all contribute to create a mesmerizing track which is just too short to be perfect !

Jolie surprise découverte au fond de ma boite mail ce soir, voici Note To Self#2 (Fear is the anthithesis of growth) un single auto-produit par le beatmaker britannique K15 qui a déjà à son actif quelques remixes nu-soul/jazzy hip-hop que je vous incite à aller découvrir sur sa page Bandcamp.
Travail remarquable sur les textures sonores, large éventail de samples de batterie lui permettant de construire une rythmique complexe, talent indéniable pour la post-production, ce titre d'instrumental hip-hop serait quasiment parfait s'il était un peu plus long !

V4YS EP Review - Terry Grant Feat. Carrie Manning - Tigerskin EP (Soul Sheep Music)

Out this week on Danish label Soul Sheep Music, Tigerskin EP from musician & producer Terry Grant is a highly recommended piece of soulful House music.

Warm keyboards, funky percussions nicely dressing up deep beats as well as sensual vocals from singer Carrie Manning are the main ingredients of the beautiful title track.

Then come a few remixes with a special distinction for Sivesgaard's new wave-like interpretation as well as Paxton Fettel's deep house version.

Sorti cette semaine sur le label danois Soul Sheep Music, Tigerskin EP est un très joli maxi de soulful House music que l'on doit au musicien et producteur Terry Grant.
Claviers chaleureux, pointes de percus relevant subtilement les deep beats qui forment la structure rythmique du morceau et vocaux sensuels de la chanteuse Carrie Manning sont les ingrédients essentiels du titre phare du maxi. Viennent ensuite deux très bons remixes : une relecture façon new-wave par le producteur Sivesgaard ainsi qu'une version deep House par Paxton Fettel. 
Jugez-en par vous-même avec les streamings ci-dessus !

iNDiG0 HiGH - Various Productions

Today I wanted to bring to your attention the work of a young Chicago-based singer and producer named iNDiGO HiGH.

Mixing warm keyboards lines with smooth hip-hop & nu-soul beats, she creates a sensual atmosphere that reaches another level when her delicate voice enters the room.
Either entirely self-produced or worked out in collaboration with a few underground beatmakers, her various demos are truly promessing and deserve some support !
