Solyl-S - Solyl-S#2 EP

An up-and-coming 6-member soul/funk band, Solyl-S was set-up almost a year ago in Paris. While regularly heating up several of the city's underground scenes and participating to some summer festivals, the band recently released a second refreshing self-titled EP.

Halfway between the 90's acid-jazz sound (think Brand New Heavies or Incognito) and the current soul revival wave (Daptones Records...), Solyl-S sound is both cheerful and irresistibly groovy.

Around a solid drums/bass/guitar rythmic section, their horns duo brings a healthy dose of energy, while their young singer Ruth Lori M'balanda demonstrates an impressive maturity whether on funky tracks or on smoother soul ballads.

The EP is available on their bandcamp page (streaming below). The band should start a new residency at the cool Les Disquaires venue in coming weeks, check them out !





Créé il y a à peine plus d'un an à Paris, le groupe soul/funk Solyl-S a rapidement écumé plusieurs scènes underground de la capitale puis participé à quelques festivals estivaux, le tout en trouvant le temps de récemment sortir un second maxi rafraîchissant à souhaits.
A mi-chemin entre acid-jazz 90's (façon Brand New Heavies voir Incognito) et revival Soul/Funk actuel   (Daptones Records...) le son du groupe est à la fois joyeux et irrésistiblement groovy.
Autour d'une solide section rythmique batterie/basse/guitare, le duo de cuivres déploie une énergie communicative pendant que la jeune chanteuse Ruth Lori M'balanda fait preuve d'une impressionnante maturité, aussi bien dans un registre funky que dans des passages plus "smooth soul".

Le maxi est disponible sur leur page Bandcamp (streaming ci-dessus). Le groupe devrait bientôt entamer une nouvelle résidence dans le fort sympathique bar-live Les Disquaires du côté de Bastille. Visite hautement recommandée si vous êtes en manque de Groove !

Zara McFarlane - Police & Thieves (Junior Murvin Cover) (Brownswood Recordings)

Let's start the week-end with a beautiful piece of Jazz with this splendid cover of a reggae classic from Junior Murvin, Police & Thieves by London singer Zara McFarlane.
The song is a tribute to Jamaica to celebrate the 50th birthday of the country's independance and will feature on her second LP to be released in early 2013 on Gilles Peterson's label Brownswood Recordings. Let's also underline the quality of the video available on YouTube.

On démarre le week-end avec un joli moment de Jazz gràce à la chanteuse britannique Zara McFarlane qui reprend brillamment un classique reggae de Junior Mulvin, Police & Thieves.
Le morceau est un tribute célébrant le 50ème anniversaire de l'indépendance de la Jamaique, il figurera dans son second album à sortir début 2013 sur le labe de Gilles Peterson, Brownswood Recordings. Soulignons aussi la qualité de la vidéo disponible sur YouTube.

Reggae Roast Feat. Earl 16 - Occupy The Session EP (Reggae Roast Records)

Reggae Roast is a very active London-based Reggae/Dub collective gathering a group of DJs, MCs and producers of all ages.
They are also developing their own label which is definitely heating up with already 11 releases in store, mostly in the form of pure reggae/dub singles and heavy dubstep remixes.

Their last production Occupy The Session featuring singer Earl 16 and producers Jim Moodie and Nick Manasseh is a perfect example of their vibrant sunny sound. It should have you want to dig into the label entire discography and put them on your radar list for future releases !

Reggae Roast est un collectif londonien très actif rassemblant DJs, MCs et producteurs partageant un même amour pour le Reggae et le Dub. 
Le projet comporte aussi un label du même nom qui dispose déjà d'un catalogue de 11 maxis dont ce tout nouveau Occupy The Session EP du chanteur Earl 16 assisté des producteurs Jim Moodie et Nick Manasseh. 
Symbolique de leur son roots et chaleureux, ce single et ses remixes devrait vous laisser avec un large sourire aux lèvres et surtout l'envie d'aller fouiner dans l'ensemble de l'excellente discographie de ce jeune label.

Handbook - Handprints EP (Cascade Records)

Underground abstract hip-hop label Cascade Records is enjoying a really hot hand at the moment, dropping gem after gem. The latest discovery of the Paris-based outfit is a young beatmaker named Handbook who is  releasing a mind-blowing EP titled Handprints.

Almost sample-free, the 8 tracks demonstrate Handbook's impressive composition talent. Expressed through sensual keyboards melodies and delightfully cosy beats, his sound is all about Groove.

L'excellent label parisien d'abstract hip-hop Cascade Records a la main chaude en ce moment. Dernière trouvaille en date, le jeune producteur Handbook qui sort un splendide maxi intitulé Handprints. 
Ne contenant quasiment aucun sample, chose rare et audacieuse dans la sphère du beatmaking, le disque démontre tout le talent de composition du jeune homme. Le groove sensuel qui se dégage de ses mélodies de claviers et de ses beats chaleureux ne devrait pas vous laisser de marbre !

Antibalas - Antibalas (Daptone Records)

5 years after their last album, the band who was at the onset of the afrobeat scene revival in the early 2000's is finally back with a new LP out on Daptone Records.

Antibalas recorded this self-titled record at the label famous old-shool studio in Brooklyn under the umbrella of their former guitarist turned successful producer Gabriel Roth. 

Following a long break during which some band members contributed to the phenomenal success of Broadway musical Fela! and others worked on solo projects or toured with a host or renowned bands, the combo reunited to offer us what I consider as their most accomplished studio work to date and the best afrobeat record of 2012.

Gathering some old tracks from their core live playlists that had never found a spot on previous albums and brand new cuts, the LP focuses on the groove side of afrobeat with irresistible rythmic lines lightened up by Abraham Amayo's abrasive lyrics. If I had always favored their live acts over their recordings since I first fell in love with their stage energy in 1999, this new album is a clear game changer to me. Recorded in less than three weeks, it demonstrates the maturity of a band that keeps improving while making no commercial compromise and keeping its remarkable humanist and open-minded approach.

An essential record, and, hopefully, a forthcoming world tour?

5 ans après leur dernier disque, le groupe qui est à l'origine du renouveau de la scène afrobeat depuis le début des années 2000 est enfin de retour avec un disque explosif sur l'incontournable label new-yorkais Daptone Records. 
Simplement intitulé Antibalas, ce nouvel opus est à mon sens le meilleur enregistrement studio d'un groupe qui n'est clairement plus seulement un phénomène de scène. Mettant avant tout l'accent sur la facette "groove" de l'afrobeat, chaque titre offre d'irrésistibles lignes rythmiques qui s'embrasent littéralement lorsqu'elles sont mises en contact avec les lyrics toujours abrasifs et caustiques du chanteur Abraham Amayo. 
Fidèle à leur approche communautaire le disque a été en partie écrit et enregistré en moins de trois semaines dans les studios old-school du label à Brooklyn sous l'égide de l'ancien guitariste du groupe devenu un producteur renommé, Gabriel Roth. Il devrait être suivi, je l'espère, d'une tournée internationale après leur marathon en cours aux Etats-Unis.

V4YS EP Review - Resonators - B.A.S.I.C. (Wah Wah 45s Records)

Always busy delivering great underground vibes from futuristic jazz to world grooves, Wah Wah 45s label is releasing a new EP for UK Reggae/Dub combo Resonators in anticipation of their first LP that will be available next autumn.

B.A.S.I.C. EP is trufhtful to the style of  their previous brillant productions, namely the combination of a bewitching dub rythmic frame and soulful vocal performance (this time by the band lead female singer Kassia Zermon whose energy somehow reminds me of early Neneh Cherry).

The single comes with a few remixes, notably the powerful jungle version of Wrongtom.

Dernière production en date de l'excellent label indépendant londonien Wah Wah 45s, voici le nouveau maxi d'un des groupes Reggae/Dub britannique les plus prometteurs du moment. 
Les Resonators sont un combo d'une dizaine de membres dont le style marrie une rythmique Dub chaleureuse et envoûtante à une touche soul amenée par leurs deux chanteuses. Ce nouveau titre particulièrement symbolique de leur son est un avant-goût de leur premier album qui sortira à l'automne prochain. Il est accompagné de plusieurs remixes dont une explosive version jungle du pensionnaire du label Ninja Tune Wrongtom.

V4YS EP Review - Julio Bashmore - Au Seve EP (Broadwalk Records)

After a phenomenal 2011 year which saw him accumulating faultless releases, Julio Bashmore is finally taking some time of the decks to offer us another hint of his producing talent while also inaugurating his own label Broadwalk Records.

Starting with Au Seve, a splendid dancefloor cut lost between 90's Chicago sound and current London bass music atmosphere, the EP goes on with Troglodytes, a beautiful deep house track with a strong soulful flava.
And then comes the UFO of the record, a 12-mn-long ride through shades of 80's soul and new-jack blended with futuristic grooves. An absolute delight...and an essential record from one of the most creative house producer of our time!

Après une année 2011 incroyable qui l'a vu enchainer les maxis impeccables et s'imposer comme l'un des producteurs House les plus créatifs de sa génération, Julio Bashmore s'est fait attendre cette année, trop occupé qu'il est à jouer aux quatre coins du monde. Il a enfin pris le temps de se poser et nous offre avec ce Au Seve EP une production une nouvelle fois époustouflante, meilleur moyen d'inaugurer son propre label Broadwalk Records.
Le disque démarre avec le titre éponyme Au Seve, petite bombe dancefloor qui rappelle le son 90's Chicago avec une pointe de bass music londonienne. Vient ensuite Troglodytes dans un registre plus Deep House mais avec encore une saveur soulful très old-school. Enfin le véritable OVNI de ce disque, le track 3, ballade de 12mn qui méandre entre Soul et New Jack encore une fois très 90's et un groove très futuriste. Une petite merveille aussi déroutante qu'envoûtante.
Un disque essentiel qui confirme l'immense talent de ce producteur qui n'a pas fini de nous surprendre !

Koreless - Lost In Tokyo Ep (feat. Jacques Greene) - Vase Records

Third release of Glasgow-based Koreless, third release of canadian producer Jacques Greene's new label Vase Recordings and third collaboration between these two artists (after Vase's inaugural production Concealer Ep earlier this year as well as the now classic Another Girl Ep last year) this Lost In Tokyo EP is a wonderful journey between the worlds of ambient, deep dubstep and deep techno. 


Starting with the title track from Koreless, an almost beatless melancholic cut featuring incredibly dreamy synths, the Ep then reveals its dancefloor side with another incredible Jacques Greene remix that keeps the deep spirit of the original track while spicing it up with dubstep/tech beats that are just irresistible.

Troisième maxi du producteur écossais Koreless, troisième sortie du label Vase créé récemment par le canadien Jacques Greene, et troisième collaboration entre les deux artistes (après le maxi inaugural du label Concealer Ep cette année et le maintenant classique Another Girl en 2011) ce Lost In Tokyo Ep nous emmène aux frontières de l'ambient, du dubstep et de la deep techno.
Le titre original de Koreless, très planant, ne comporte quasiment aucun beat et brille avant tout par la volupté de ses nappes de synthés. Jacques Greene en garde ensuite la deepness tout en l'habillant pour le dancefloor gràce à une rythmique imparable. Une remarquable production !

V4YS Concert Review - Roy Hargrove RH Factor - Live In Paris, New Morning - 180712

It's already mid-july but yesterday only was the first relatively decent hot summer day of an otherwise rainy year in Paris !
Coincidence or not, the temperature just rose even more in the evening thanks to Roy Hargrove and its RH Factor band who started a series of three consecutive gigs at the New Morning club.

If I was not surprised by a relatively classic playlist focusing on their 2003 and 2006 LPs, I was once again mesmerized by their ability to sublimate the many shades of groove. 


From funk to nu-soul, from hints of hip-hop to smooth R&B, they know it all and take an obvious pleasure to take their audience from one spot to the next. 

Add to that a real "collective" approach leaving ample room for each of these world-class musicians to express themselves through devastating solos (with a special mention to Todd Parsnow at the guitar and the unbelievable nu-soul vocal solo from drummer Jason J.T. Thomas) and you understand why they undoubtedly are one of the must-see contemporary live jazz/funk combo.

V4YS Ep Review - Alexis Davis - 3 EP (Expansions Collective)

I have been regularly highlighting the quality abstract/jazzy hip-hop productions of Manchester-based producer Mecca:83 (also known for his other alias Rise). 


The talended young man is now launching another exciting new project with fellow british beatmaker Simon S, and a couple of americans artists : producer Spinnerty and MC Replife. 


The crew is launching a digital label/platform named Expansions Collective that should definitally be added to your watchlist. At the same time they are creating Alexis Davis, a musical project that sees them adding up their skills.


And guess what? the first EP, titled "3" inaugurating both the label and the Alexis Davis band is close to perfect ! 
Groovy beats, jazzy basslines, beautiful trumpet, sax and piano samples, faultless flow from Replife on 3 and The Lift and a kind of Pharoah Sanders tribute on the last track Alexis Davis Theme, all make up for one of the very best hip-hop record I've heard in months. 
Will be part of my 2012 favorites four sure !

J'ai régulièrement souligné sur le blog les excellentes  productions abstract/jazzy hip-hop du producteur mancunien Mecca:83 (dont on connait aussi l'autre nom d'artiste Rise). 
Il nous revient avec un nouveau projet ambitieux qui le voit s'associer avec un autre britannique, le beatmaker Simon S et deux américains : le producteur Spinnerty et le MC Replife.
A la clé deux initiatives qui méritent toute votre délicate attention : un label digital nommé Expansions Collective et un nouveau projet musical intitulé Alexis Davis qui est en fait l'addition des talents de ces 4 artistes. Inaugurant en même temps ces deux nouvelles aventures, le maxi 3 est un quasi sans-faute.
Rythmique groovy, lignes de basses venues du jazz, magnifiques samples de trompette, sax ou piano, flow imparable de Replife sur les titres 3 et The Lift, et hommage plus ou moins déguisé au saxophoniste Pharoah Sanders sur le dernier morceau Alexis Davis Theme, n'en jetez plus, tout y est ! Et voilà sans aucun doute l'une des meilleures productions hip-hop qu'il m'ait été donné de découvrir ces derniers mois.

V4YS Concert Review - Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Festival, Sète, France - July2012

Back from sunny Sète with the head full of great sounds heard during the seventh edition of Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Festival ! 

Matthew Halsall Trio

For those not familiar with this event, it's a unique opportunity to see  a world-class line-up of artists during a 5-day window, ranging from the jazz world to the most futuristic electro sounds. 
A kind of condensed version of the outstanding Worldwide Radio Show Gilles has been hosting for years on the BBC airwaves...with the extra help of the sunshine, the already hot Mediterranean sea as well as the splendid former-fort-turned-theater of the lovely city of Sète !

Robert Glasper Experiment, Portico Quartet, Matthew Halsall Trio, Tinariwen, Little Dragon, Electric Wire Hustle, Gang Colours, as well as a wide range of outstanding DJs like Four Tet, Lefto or Julio Bashmore to name just a few, the program was once again phenomenal and allowed the cosmopolitan audience to travel through a myriad of musical atmospheres.

As far as I'm concerned I'm still under the bewitching influence of the immensely creative DJ Set from Four Tet, the joyful and energetic gig from Little Dragon and the sweetness and spirituality of Matthew Halsall's trumpet.






Well you probably got it, this festival is an essential artistic experience opening the minds, warming the hearts, in a word it should almost be mandatory !
