Vibes4YourSoul Loves Edits#35 - Submotion Orchestra - All Yours (Freddie Joachim & Mecca:83 Remixes)

Finest Hour, by UK downtempo/jazz band Submotion Orchestra, was part of Vibes4YourSoul 2011 Favorites selection, with All Yours one of the hottest track of the LP.

Here are a couple nice remixes of the song by two of my favorite underground beatmakers, US producer Freddie Joachim, and Manchester-based Mecca:83. Their splendid jazzy beats productions are probably already familiar to those who enjoy this blog's regular podcasts.

V4YS Album Review - Submotion Orchestra - Fragments (Exceptional Records)

Leeds-based combo Submotion Orchestra's first album Finest Hour was one of my 2011 favorite picks. The band is already back with Fragments, a second LP enabling them to dig further into their original siganture blending lush nu-jazz atmospheres to electronic bass music.

An impressive orchestration putting more emphasis on deep electronic sounds & keyboards and an even stronger role devoted to singer Ruby Wood, whose voice definitily rhymes with purity, makes this second LP a brillant confirmation. Next to Cinematic Orchestra, northern England has definitilly infanted a second blazing fururistic jazz band !

They're currently touring England, I hope they'll soon be crossing the channel, in the meantime please find below a streaming of my favorite track, Thinking as well as an Album preview :






Leur premier album Finest Hour fut l'un de mes coups de coeur de 2011. Le combo de Leeds Submotion Orchestra est déjà de retour avec un second album qui sonne comme une confirmation de leur immense talent. 
Fidèle à un son novateur brouillant les pistes entre nu-jazz et influences de la bass music londonienne, ils poussent plus loin les expérimentations dans Fragments. Orchestration mettant l'accent sur les sonorités électro et les claviers numériques et leadership encore plus affirmé de l'exquise chanteuse Ruby Wood permettent au groupe de nous emmener dans un univers à la fois classieux et chaleureux. 
Actuellement en tournée en Grande-Bretagne j'espère qu'ils franchiront rapidement la Manche pour nous présenter ce joli disque en live.

V4YS Album Review - Submotion Orchestra - Finest Hour (Exceptional Records)

Submotion Orchestra was created two years ago in Leeds for a special live show at the famous York Minster cathedral.
Was it a sign of the Gods (of music)?
To me there is no doubt!
Since I discovered their  first stunning Ep a few months ago I have been eargerly waiting for the LP "Finest Hour", which is at last being released on the (well-named) label Exceptional Records.
Led by drummer Tommy Evans and electro producer Dom Howard the combo features 7 outstanding Uk musicians blending a delicate nu-jazz sound with a hypnotic dub/dubstep-influenced rythmic background. A kind of futuristic marriage between Cinematic Orchestra and some early Massive Attack beats.
Add to that Ruby Wood's bewitching soulful voice  and you get a true moment of grace.
But that's not all!
In the band's opinion, this project was always supposed to reach its climax on stage, which is not always the case for this kind of downtempo productions. Considering the brilliant Maida Vale live sessions aired a few weeks back on the BBC, I would highly recommend you try to catch them for their first proper tour that started recently in the Uk (before hopefully visiting the rest of the world)!

Submotion Orchestra est né en 2009 à Leeds à l'occasion d'un concert très spécial dans la majestueuse cathédrale gothique de York Minster. Etait-ce un signe des Dieux (de la musique)? Cela ne fait aucun doute pour moi!
Depuis la découverte il y a quelques mois de leur superbe premier maxi, j'attendais impatiemment la sortie de l'album, "Finest Hour". Il est enfin disponible sur le bien-nommé label Exceptional Records et devrait faire date.
Sous la houlette du batteur Tommy Evans et du producteur electro Dom Howard, le combo de 7 musiciens britanniques associe un son nu-jazz délicat à une rythmique hypnotique aux accents dub et dubstep. Une sorte de mariage futuriste entre Cinematic Orchestra et un Massive Attack des premières heures. On a vu pire comme filiation non?
Rajoutez la voix envoûtante et très soulful de la chanteuse Ruby Wood et vous obtenez un pur moment de grâce (et accessoirement un de mes gros coups de coeur 2011).
Ce n'est pas tout. Le groupe a conçu ce projet avec l'idée directrice qu'il prendrait toute sa dimension sur scène, ce qui n'est pas toujours le cas avec ce genre de productions downtempo. Si je me fie aux superbes sessions radio enregistrées live et diffusées il y a quelques semaines sur la BBC je ne peux qu'envier ceux qui auront la chance d'assister au tour qu'ils viennent d'entamer en Angleterre (avant je l'espère de venir en France).

V4YS Concert Review - Bonobo Live Band Feat. Andreya Triana - Live At Le Trianon, Paris, 130411

Après une série de concerts acoustiques en 2010 à la suite de la sortie de son très bon 4ème album "Black Sands", c'est en version grand orchestre que Bonobo (aka Simon Green) continue de faire vivre sur scène ses productions. De passage au Trianon, il nous a offert un très bon moment downtempo/nujazz accompagné d'une dizaine de musiciens (avec notamment une section cuivres et un trio de violons).

Aux commandes des samples tout en jouant de son instrument de prédilection, la basse, il avait aussi emmené dans ses bagages la remarquable chanteuse Andreya Triana dont on a souvent parlé sur ce blog l'an passé à l'occasion de sa participation remarquée sur Black Sands mais aussi de la sortie de son premier album solo "Lost Where I Belong". Alternant les titres des premiers disques de Simon (notamment plusieurs extraits de "Dial M For Monkey") et les morceaux de son dernier opus, le groupe a déroulé sur scène une orchestration très travaillée (non sans rappeler l'approche live de Cinematic Orchestra qui restent les maîtres du genre à mon goût) où il manquait peut-être un petit zeste d'improvisation et de folie pour que la soirée prenne encore plus d'ampleur.

A noter aussi la brillante participation sur deux titres de Ruby Wood, la chanteuse de Submotion Orchestra, groupe electro-jazz dont je vous recommande chaudement le premier Ep, "Finest Hour", paru en 2010 en attendant très bientôt leur premier album.

After a series of acoustic live shows in 2010 following the release of his great 4th album "Black Sands", Bonono (aka Simon Green) is currently touring with an large orchestra featuring both a horns and a string section. 
At the lovely Le Trianon theater in northern Paris, the band delivered an ambitious downtempo/nujazz show reminiscent of Cinematic Orchestra live performances.
Andreya Triana, whose name was often quoted on the blog last year following her outstanding contribution on "Black Sands" but also the release of her first LP "Lost Where I Belong", was also there to add her folksy soulful vocals on several tracks. Alternating songs from Simon earlier productions (mosty notably fom the famous LP "Dial M For Monkey") and from "Black Sands", they presented a finely-worked orchestration where the only thing missing to me was a hint of improvisation. 
Worth mentionning as well was the brilliant contribution of Submotion Orchestra singer Ruby Wood on two tracks. I actually highly recommend anyone not familiar with this Leeds-based electro-jazz band to check their outstanding first Ep "Finest Hour", a promessing production anticipating their soon-to-be released first LP.
