V4YS Concert Review - Bonobo Live Band Feat. Andreya Triana - Live At Le Trianon, Paris, 130411

Andreya Triana, Le Trianon, Apr11

Andreya Triana, Le Trianon, Apr11
After a series of acoustic live shows in 2010 following the release of his great 4th album "Black Sands", Bonono (aka Simon Green) is currently touring with an large orchestra featuring both a horns and a string section.
At the lovely Le Trianon theater in northern Paris, the band delivered an ambitious downtempo/nujazz show reminiscent of Cinematic Orchestra live performances.
Andreya Triana, whose name was often quoted on the blog last year following her outstanding contribution on "Black Sands" but also the release of her first LP "Lost Where I Belong", was also there to add her folksy soulful vocals on several tracks. Alternating songs from Simon earlier productions (mosty notably fom the famous LP "Dial M For Monkey") and from "Black Sands", they presented a finely-worked orchestration where the only thing missing to me was a hint of improvisation.
Worth mentionning as well was the brilliant contribution of Submotion Orchestra singer Ruby Wood on two tracks. I actually highly recommend anyone not familiar with this Leeds-based electro-jazz band to check their outstanding first Ep "Finest Hour", a promessing production anticipating their soon-to-be released first LP.

V4YS Concert Review - Roy Ayers - Live At New Morning, Paris, 110411 (1st part Setenta)

Roy Ayers, Live in Paris, Apr11

Roy Ayers, Live in Paris, Apr11

Can't You See Me, Runnin Away, Everybody Loves The Sunshine, We Live In Brooklyn Baby...).
Roy Ayers, Live in Paris, Apr11

Shame on me, I doubted.
Because of a disturbing memory from a disapointing concert a few years ago, I doubted a bit in the ability of Roy Ayers to still live up to its legend on stage. I nevertheless bought my ticket a long time ago as he is one of my musical hero alogside artists like Fela Kuti, Marvin Gaye or Curtis Mayfield
Following the mind-blowing show he offered at the New Morning in Paris last night my ridiculous concerns were obviously proven wrong!
After a really cool introductionary set from Paris-based latin-funk combo Setenta, it took only 5 minutes and a groovy version of Searchin' for Roy and his legendary vibraphone to set the room on fire.
Supported by a top-quality band (John Pressley backing vocals, Donald Nicks  bass, Raeford Gaskins keyboards/sax, Lee Pearson II drums, Tony Smith guitar and Chief Udoh Essiet  percussions) he delighfully interpreted several of his timeless classics (Can't You See MeRunnin AwayEverybody Loves The SunshineWe Live In Brooklyn Baby...).
Showing a communicative enthusiasm and energy, he also left ample room to let his talented musicians express themselves through furious solos.
The highlight of the set to me was a 20mn-long version of "Black Family", a brilliant wink at the afrobeat anthems of his friend Fela.
To get a small idea of the atmosphere, you'll find above a video of "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" (sorry for the poor sound quality). Those who, like me, are addicted to this legendary song may also enjoy checking my recent special selection gathering my favorites covers of the track with streaming and dwnld links for each.

V4YS Album Review - Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 - From Africa With Fury: Rise (Knitting Factory Records)

Seun Kuti, Live at La Défense, March2011 - Photo Vincent B.
Almost 3 years ago Seun Kuti knocked-out by surprise many afrobeat fans with his first album "Many Things" recorded with his father legendary band, Egypt 80.
Truthful to Fela's politically-conscious tone while also echoing on stage his remarkable charisma and energy, he quickly became a leader of a currently blooming new afrobeat scene (more on this musical space with our recent podcast "Long Live Afrobeat").

From Africa With Fury: Rise”, his second album out now Knitting Factory Records, is another essential production bringing together Afrobeat best recipe : a ferocious message supported by ferocious afro-grooves.Recorded in Rio De Janeiro and supervised (among others) by the legendary producer Brian Eno, the spirit of this record can be summarized with a simple extract from a recent interview  he gave to Afrobeat Diaries : That's what music should be. Pop music today is all about me, me, me. Nobody is singing about we. But nothing can change if we don't look out for our brothers and sisters."

Seun Kuti, March2011 - Photo Vincent B.
At a time where many African populations are courageously standing up against outdated regimes, Fela's scream denouncing dictatorships, corruption, natural resources over-exploitation…has never resonated so loudly. Using his own biting words, Seun takes up his father's torch and tries to keep on inspiring the people currently suffering in silence on the continent.
To be true, the message would not resonate so fiercely without the beats!
Infectious rythmic frames, raging horns, powerful choirs, it's almost impossible to stand still listening to this musical hurricane.
Fela was often saying that “Music will be the weapon of the future”. With "From Africa With Fury: Rise”, his son Seun once again makes the prediction self-fulfilling.
Check it out by yourself and don’t miss out the explosive forthcoming live tour!

Below streaming of "African Soldier" and "Rise" :

That's what music should be. Pop music today is all about me, me, me. Nobody is singing about we. But nothing can change if we don't look out for our brothers and sisters."

P.S : Thanks to Vincent for his great pictures taken last week in Paris.

V4YS Album Review - Loch Lomond - Little Me Will Start A Storm (Tender Loving Empire Records)

When I start one of my regular music digging session I never know how my day (or to be more precise my late evening) will play out.
Will I be thrilled by an overlooked rare groove gem found at the back of an obscure blog like this one? Will I be seduced by a long-awaited new release from one of the numerous artists I follow closely? Will I be moved by a lucky discovery as amazing as unexpected? or will I just give up after several disappointing listening experiences?
Today definitely belongs to the third category with the discovery of Loch Lomond's new album "Little Me Will Start A Storm".
Just out on Tender Love Empire Records this LP is without a doubt the best folk record I've been listening to for more than a year.
Led by the stunning singing talent of Ritchie Young, who can be as touching and fragile when he's on soprano mode than energetic or mournful when he moves on to his bass side, Loch Lomond is an american sextet based in Portland, Oregon. If acoustic guitars and vocals-led melodies are at the heart of its songs, the omnipresence of violins and several less traditional instruments like banjo, ukulele or melodica characterizes its "chamber folk" which also carries a delicate celtic scent.
Alternating between beautiful symphonic-like orchestrations ("Elephants & Little Girls", "Earth Has Moved Again", "Water Bells"...), more regular folksy tracks ("Egg Song", "Water In Astoria"...) and lighter moments ("Blue Lead Fences") this short album is filled with the right kind of melancholic vibrations. The ones that make you pause, reflect and move forward.
Sadly the song "Earth Has Moved Again" carries a particularly topical title, but the chorus goes on singing "We Can Start Again", a simple invocation that has rarely been so essential.

Below, streaming of the single "Elephants And Little Girls" :

V4YS Album Review - Bibio - Mind Bokeh (Warp Records)

Almost two years after the release of his ground-breaking fourth album "Ambivalence Avenue", Uk-based producer Bibio (aka Stephen Wilkinson) is back on Warp Records with another brilliant record called "Mind Bokeh".
A quick wiki search taught me that "bokeh" is a technical word used in photography to describe "the blur, or the aesthetic quality of the blur in out-of-focus areas of an image". Well this seems to be a particularly well-suited concept to describe Bibio's music. Even more than his great melodies (the "in-focus" part) what seduces me most about his productions are the extremely creative and dreamy sound universe surrounding the core of his tracks.
A bit more soulful and pop-oriented than "Ambivalence Avenue", Mind Bokeh has the same faculty of transporting the listener into a woozy world full of vintage keyboards, hazy vocals effects, crakling strings and undefinable samples.
From the sweet pop universe of "Excuses" & "More Excuses" to the groovy vibes of "Prententious", the afro-brazilian rythms of "K Is For Kelson" or the deep melancholic housy beats of "Saint-Christopher", the journey is full of surprises. So let it go, lose your marks and enter the out of focus part of the world, where Mr Bibio rules!
Below streamings of Excuses"and "Saint-Christopher" :

V4YS Ep Review - Gold Panda - Marriage Ep

His first album, "Lucky Shiner", was one of my favorite records of 2010.
Gold Panda is back with a brand new Ep on Notown/Ghostly International consisting of four remixes of the track "Marriage'" which was one of the highlight of  the LP.

From the introducing deep asian vibes-flavoured dubstep rework by Star Slinger, to the splendid folkish/world remix by Forest Swords, the magical abstract beat version of Baths or the sweet downtempo cut by Halls, each version measures up to the quality of the original. A small jewel!

Below streaming of all 4 versions :

V4YS Album Review - Eric Legnini & The Afro Jazz Beat - The Vox (Discograph Records)

If belgian pianist Eric Legnini's first three albums with drummer Frank Agulhon and double-bassist Thomas Bramerie made him famous primarily on the jazz scene, his groovy sound borrowing vibes from the acid/afro-jazz worlds had many bet he would sooner or later cross some kind of musical Rubicon.
With the release of "The Vox" on Discograph Records, that has become a reality.
On top of his loyal rythmic section, he invited several musicians with clear funk or afrobeat background : bassist/guitarist Daniel Roméo, guitarist Kiala Nzavotunga (who played with his majesty Fela Kuti himself and later founded Ghettoblaster), plus an old-school horn section. Last but not least he incorporated for the first time a vocalist on almost half of the tracks with the presence of american soul/folk singer Krystle Warren.
This supporting combo, who rightfully named himself "The Afro Jazz Beat", brought a decisive touch to the writing and producing of "The Vox". From afro tracks like "Black President" or "Joy", carrying recognizable afrobeat guitar lines, to soul/funk inspired tracks like "I Need You"or "The Vox", this record brilliantly crosses the border with the "groove world" in its widest sense. The final touch will probably be added on stage with a promising tour starting now in France, don't miss them!
Find below a streaming of "The Vox" and "Joy" :

Le bien nommé "The Afro Jazz Beat" était né.

V4YS Concert Review - Erik Truffaz Quartet - Live In Paris, La Cigale, 020311

Erik Truffaz, La Cigale, 020311
Marc Erbetta, La Cigale, 020311

It'd been almost 10 years since I last saw Erik Truffaz Quartet live.
At the time they had just released a couple of groundbreaking albums blurring the lines between jazz, groove and broken beats worlds ("The Dawn", "Bending New Corners"). Since then the band has become a cornerstone of the nu-jazz scene, consistently producing exciting new music integrating a wide range of musical influences. I was therefore particularly excited to go to La Cigale yesterday night for what turned out to be a breathtaking show.
Playing tracks from their latest LP "In Between" as well as several older compositions, alternating heavy groove with nu-jazz, the quartet offered 2 hours of pure happiness to a mesmerized audience.
The infernal rythmic section led by Marcello Guliani on bass and Marc Erbetta on drums set a perfect stage allowing Truffaz to display his inimitable trumpet sound. Add to this a heavy dose of Rhodes solos by Benoît Corboz, a subtle participation from the promising singer Anna Aaron for the "encore", a magnificent stage lightning and you get their recipe for a memorable live-music moment.
The groovy cover from Gainsbourg's legendary song "Je t'aime moi non plus" to end the gig was the icing on an already appetizing cake!
They'll be back at the end of the year in Paris and are currently touring in Europe so don't do like me, don't wait another 10 years to go and catch them live!
Please find above a small video from their live take of "Sweet Mercy", a track from the "Bending New Corners" album.

V4YS Album Review - Radiohead - The King Of Limbs (XL Records)

I'll be quick on this one as it's surely reviewed all over the net. Still, I wanted to drop a line or two as I'm more and more seduced by this 8th Radiohead album after several listens this week.
Those who are looking for a return to their early days indie rock fame may be disappointed, but if they're ready to trust Thom Yorke's crew and enter into "The Kings Of Limbs" without preconceived expectations, then they should be pleasantly surprised.
Halfway between a true "album" and an extended Ep, this 37mn long record confirms the will of the band to pursue new musical directions blending folk, indie, electro and soulful influences.
While the first half leaves centerstage to ambitious abstract drumming-led tracks, the last four tracks are more melodic and feature amazing vocals performances from Thom Yorke. Specifically, songs like "Lotus Flower", "Give Up The Ghost" or "Separator" are little jewels filled with melancholy, mistery and sweetness.
Freed from any commercial pressure, eager for always more new musical experiences, Radiohead demonstrate with this latest release that they're still hungry. May they keep on challenging our ears with such creative productions!
Below a small streaming of "Give Up The Ghost" :

Ci-dessus petit streaming du sublime "Give Up The Ghost".

V4YS Album Review - Nicolas Jaar - Space Is Only Noise (Circus Company Recordings)

Another week, another talented young producer blurs the lines between electro, jazz and pop worlds.

Like James Blake, Nicolas Jaar is only in his early twenties, but his name already rings a bell to many electro music fans who have been enjoying his first EPs or remixes. His recent edit series (free dwlnd here), revisiting tracks from artists as diverse as Nina Simone, New Order, Dave Brubeck Quartet are a great showcase of his producing edge and eclectic musical influences.

Space Is Only Noise”, his first album coming out on the excellent french label Circus Company Records, is not a dancefloor-oriented electro record. Reminiscent in some way of early productions from  Bugge Wesseltoft or Gotan Project  with a hint of Dilla-like grooves, the LP's rythmic frame is based on minimal slo-mo beats and throbbing hip-hop vibes. Then come subtle jazzy piano, keyboard or guitar strings and the final touch, outstanding hypnotic vocals (whether his own deep voice or several movies dialog samples) that give the overall record its original pop touch.
You'll enjoy listening to it on a lazy sunday afternoon, at the end of a sleepness night or on a long plane trip, but more whatever the moment, you'll enjoy it best if played in one go. A true "concept album" somehow.
Below streaming of "Space Is Only Noise If You Can See" & "Balance Her In Between Your Eyes" :

V4YS Album Review - Toro Y Moi - Underneath The Pine (Carpark Records)

Less than a year after the release of his outstanding first album "Causers Of This"  (part of our favorite 2010 records ) North-Caroliner Toro Y Moi (aka Chaz Bundick) is back with a second LP titled "Underneath The Pine", to be released February 22nd on Carpark Records.

Brilliantly blending pop, indie and soulful beats, "Causers Of This" was  filled with an exquisite form of melancholy emanating from addictive melodies and ethereal vocals. So is "Underneath The Pine", which is also home of a myriad of warm sound layers coming straight out Chaz's magical electronic keyboards.
Still, this new album is not "Causers"' twin brother.
Sounding more "produced",  it carries a generally funkier sound characterised by the importance of  basslines throughout the album. This is especially true on a couple of tracks, "New Beat" & "Still Sound", which are supported by groovy slo-mo housy beats that should sound great on early dance-floors.
This second LP is also stronger on the (nu-)folk side. The splendid  acoustic guitar-led "Before I'm Done" or sweet organ-led ballad "Divina" being my favorite cuts in the genre.

Pushing deeper his original soulful abstract-pop sound, Toro Y Moi's new LP is another winner. Check by yourself by listening to the full album on Urban Outfitters music website.

Below videos from "Still Sound" & "New Beat"  :

V4YS Album Review - James Blake - James Blake LP (Atlas/A&M Records)

There has been much buzz and hype surrounding James Blake these last few months.
Regular readers of this blog already know that I find this "noise" entirely deserved.
The release of his first LP this week, simply self-titled, is another opportunity to explain why he should be followed closely!

Through his first EPs ("The Bells Sketch", "CMYK", "Klavierwierke"), we discovered a talented home-producer, pushing forward the fascinating new frontier of Uk electro/dubstep scene with creative downtempo tracks that sounded like no others.
His last release in 2010, a sensitive slo-motion cover of  Feist's folk song “Limit To Your Love, moved in a slightly different direction, giving hints of his superb singing ability.
As a symbol maybe, “Limit To Your Love” is the only track from his previous EPs that is included in an LP which clearly embraces what I would call the “futuristic folk” direction of this remarkable cover.
If the musical frame of the album still carries a delicate aftertaste of the dubstep/post-dubstep world he's been regularly tagged in, its main feature is its minimalism. Deep bass layers answer piano/keyboards melodies, leaving centerstage to an ambitious vocal work.
Though the voice tone differ widely from one song to the next, the same James Blake sings on each song. On top his a pure and somewhat androgynous voice, his mastering of vocals effects and filters techniques adds a misterious touch that make this LP truly unique.

To be honest everything is not (yet) perfect. The ensemble is a bit inconsistent with tracks like "Wilehms Screams", "I Never Learnt To Share", "Lindesfarne II", "To Care (Like You)", "Limit To Your Love" or "I Mind" standing out while some others sound a bit unfinished to me. Still this album is an exquisite piece of avant-garde music, brilliantly linking folk and songwriting with subtle dubstep vibrations.

Having recently enjoyed his short live set during Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards evening in London, I'm now looking to see a full live act.
He should tour soon, joined by a couple of musicians (one drummer, one guitarist/sampler).
