Zara McFarlane - If You Knew Her (Brownswood Recordings)

Ever since the advance release a few months ago of her amazing cover of Junior Murvin reggae classic Police & Thieves, UK singer Zara McFarlane second LP was one of the record I was most eagerly awaiting.

Out now on Gilles Peterson always prescient Brownswood Recordings label, If You Knew Her is an inspiring journey into Zara's authentic nu-jazz world. Adding moving words to the delicate & minimal notes from her remarkable band (among whom pianist Peter Edwards), the young British singer's sensitivity works magic all along. I'm no controller, but to me she's definitely validated her ticket to the contemporary Jazz singers first class train, alongside the likes of José James, Gregory Porter or Laura Mvula.

A few extracts below, among which my favorite track, Angie La La, with Leron Thomas as a guest on trumpet and vocals (whose recent debut LP is another one to check out).

Disponible sur l'excellent label de Gilles Peterson Brownswood Recordings, If You Knew Her tient toutes ses promesses. Voyage sensoriel dans le délicat univers nu-jazz de la jeune chanteuse britannique, on y découvre ses textes intimistes, couchés sur le cadre rythmique épuré d'un remarquable trio emmené notamment par le pianiste Peter Edwards. Un disque plein de sensibilité, qui la place sans aucun doute dans le wagon de tête des chanteurs Jazz contemporains, avec des compagnons de voyage tels que José James, Gregory Porter ou Laura Mvula.

I was pretty short in energy these last few days, I needed something strong, something hot, something colourful to get things going. Healthier than any kind of vitamin supplements crap, an evening with the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble seemed like a much more promising prescription. Well…it was.

The Chicago-based crew simply turned the New Morning upside down yesterday, with its powerful classic brass sound, spiced up with old-school hip-hop. 

Energetic, joyful, funny and terribly funky, the Cohran brothers turn their horns into weapon of mass  reconciliation. Their music is not for i-pods, it’s made to be shared live. So therapists and pills makers beware, these guys are a serious business threat!


A glimpse of the atmosphere... : 

Plus efficace que n’importe quelle boite de vitamines, une soirée avec l’HypnoticBrass Ensemble devrait figurer en tête de liste des prescriptions "anti-coup de mou" par tout généraliste un tant soi peu sérieux. 

La fanfare de Chicago l’a brillamment prouvé hier soir, en retournant littéralement un New Morning, qui en a pourtant vu d’autres. Remontant imparable, leur chaleureux Jazz/Funk de rue s’acoquine parfaitement avec leur amour du Hip-Hop old-school. 
Energiques, drôles, joyeux et terriblement funky, les 8 frères Cohran ne font pas de la musique pour i-pod. Leur son fraternel se partage, il se vit ensemble, en chair et en os. A l’heure de l’Obamacare, les mutuelles pourraient songer à prendre en charge une séance annuelle en compagnie de leurs cuivres. Elles économiseraient sans doute bien des remboursements de psy!

King Krule - Baby Blue (Mikey Sol "Too Krule, Baby Blue" remix)

Part of our 2013 Favorites Selection, Uk songwriter King Krule's debut LP, 6 feet beneath the moon, is filled with futuristic blues gems, such as the Baby Blue ballad.

This splendid track inspired young underground producer Mikey Sol, who is offering us this brillant 2-step/broken beats-flavored version of King Krule's sound.

Keep an eye on this young US artist Soundcloud page, I have a feeling it could be spreading a steady stream of pleasant surprises in the months  ahead.

L'album du songwriter anglais King Krule s'est aisément glissé dans note sélection 2013 Favorites en fin d 'année dernière. L'un des plus jolis morceaux du disques, Baby Blue, a inspiré Mikey Sol, jeune beatmaker américain. Son Too Krule, Baby Blue, conserve l'esprit blues futuriste du titre tout en y ajoutant une série bien sentie de beats 2-step/broken beats. Un jeune producteur de plus à suivre dans les mois à venir.

Favela - Easy Yoke EP

Here is a beautiful downtempo EP from Leeds-based producer Favela.

Echoing the subtle melancholic sound of confirmed producers like Shlohmo, Tropics or Vondelpark, this young producer displays an impressive songwriting and producing talent.
Released a few months ago, his first self-titled EP is also a gem to check out.

Second maxi du jeune producteur britannique Favela, Easy Yoke est un petit bijou downtempo qui évoque les sonorités rêveuses et mélancoliques d'artistes confirmés comme Shlohmo, Tropics or Vondelpark. En l'espace de deux très jolis morceaux, Favela y démontre une maîtrise impressionnante de l'écriture et de la production. Sorti il y a quelques mois, son premier maxi éponyme est aussi à déguster sans modération.

Saâda Bonaire - Saâda Bonaire (Captured Tracks Records)

Originally a German 1982 project led by Bremen-based DJ and producer Ralf Behrendt and would-be singers Stefanie Lange & Claudia Hossfeld, Saâda Bonaire did not really make it to the spotlights because of budget issues at EMI label at the time.

A unique single and a few lost recordings...that hopefully were revealed to the world a month ago by Captured Tracks, at what looks like a perfect timing.

With a funky 80's disco/pop signature sounding so hot right now, this little gem smells Blondie and Grace Jones, with a mysterious twist courtesy of dub & oriental influences (strings, percussion) coming from the many foreign musicians involved in the recording sessions by Ralf Behrendt. Danceable at times, relaxing at others, this LP looks like the perfect combination to start the year.

Projet allemand de 1982 lancé par le DJ et producteur de Brème Ralf Behrendt et deux improbables chanteuses (Stefanie Lange, Claudia Hossfeld), Saâda Bonaire n'a jamais  réellement eu l'occasion de se faire connaître en raison de problèmes bugdgétaires chez EMI à l'époque.
Un single unique et quelques enregistrements restés dans les cartons...jusqu'au mois dernier, où le label Captured Tracks a eu la bonne idée de les publier sans doute au meilleur des moments, tant le son disco/pop 80's du groupe est actuellement dans l'air du temps. Les lignes de basses et les synthés évoquent Blondie ou Grace Jones, le tout avec une pointe d'exotisme via des influences dub et orientales, émanant probablement de la ribambelle de musiciens étrangers qui entouraient Ralf Behrendt. Entre titres quasi dance-floor et d'autres plus lounge, cet album inattendu est un jolie (re)découverte.

Un petit plongeon dans les rues de New-York grâce au projet original de Kjell Anderson qui s'inspire des son experience de couriser à vélo dans la grosse pomme.
Dans Full Manifest, ce beatmaker de talent utilise une myriade de samples saisis au hasard des rues pour colorer des compositions de groovy Hip-hop voir drum'n'bass. Un véritable concept album qui nous plonge avec bonheur dans la "street life" effervescente de la ville.

Chantal Acda - Let Your Hands Be My Guide (Gizeh Records)

Released a couple of weeks ago on the highly recommended Manchester-based label Gizeh Records, Dutch singer Chantal Acda first solo LP is one of these magical musical surprises I crave for. Lost in my large "to-listen-to" list, Let Your Hands Be My Guide ruined even more my late weekly musical schedule as I truly had a very hard time stopping the "repeat function" once it started playing.

Mixing shades of chamber folk to downtempo atmospheres, the album is a delicate encounter between Chantal Acda' warm and languid voice and the delicate orchestration of four eclectic musicians (Nils Frahm, Peter Broderick, Gyda Valtysdottir, Shahzad Ismaily). Feelings of nostalgia and serenity quickly win you over, inner thoughts start to wander and you're off to an intimate journey thanks to this poetic passport.

Sorti il y a quelques jours sur l'excellent label indépendant mancunien Gizeh Records, le premier album solo de la chanteuse hollandaise Chantal Acda est l'un de ces petits moments de magie musicale que j'affectionne tant. Le genre de disque perdu au milieu de ma playlist en retard, qui me fait immédiatement lever l'oreille et cesser toute activité lorsqu'il se faufile dans mes haut-parleurs.

Associant un univers chamber folk à des atmosphères downtempo, Let Your Hands Be My Guide est le fruit de la rencontre entre la voix chaude et langoureuse de Chantal Acda et l'orchestration délicate dessinée par 4 musiciens remarquables, aux parcours très différents (Nils Frahm, Peter Broderick, Gyda Valtysdottir, Shahzad Ismaily). Des sensations de nostalgie et de sérénité s'installent, les pensées commencent à vagabonder et un voyage intime débute grâce à ce véritable passeport poétique.

Vibes4YourSoul Loves Edits#35 - Submotion Orchestra - All Yours (Freddie Joachim & Mecca:83 Remixes)

Finest Hour, by UK downtempo/jazz band Submotion Orchestra, was part of Vibes4YourSoul 2011 Favorites selection, with All Yours one of the hottest track of the LP.

Here are a couple nice remixes of the song by two of my favorite underground beatmakers, US producer Freddie Joachim, and Manchester-based Mecca:83. Their splendid jazzy beats productions are probably already familiar to those who enjoy this blog's regular podcasts.

A few months ago I highlighted the first EP of The Fontanelles, a London afrobeat combo who was originally set-up to perform as the onstage band for the Uk version of the musical  Fela!
Clearly restless when it's about spreading rejoicing afro/funk vibes around, the band is already back with Horns Of Freedom, a hot debut LP on First Word Records.

Il y a quelques mois je vous mentionnais le premier maxi du groupe britannique The Fontanelles, combo à l'origine formé pour animer la version londonienne de la comédie musicale Fela!, dont le groupe Antibalas a contribué à l'immense succès à Broadway il y a deux à trois ans.
Cette aventure scénique réussie se poursuit aujourd'hui avec un premier album instrumental chaleureux qui sort sur label anglais First Word Records.
Entre afrobeat old-school fidèle à l'esprit du Black President, et morceaux plus reggae/world, le son instrumental du groupe respire la joie, l'échange et la convivialité, bref tout ce qu'on aime !

Paskal & Urban Absolutes - Lux (Sonar Kollektiv)

Following a series of beautiful EPs and remixes, German electro duo Paskal & Urban Absolutes are releasing Lux, a radiant debut LP on Jazzanova's always prescient label Sonar Kollektiv.

Masters in the art of designing dreamy slo-mo house atmospheres, Alexander Kastner & Adrian Hoffman brought some great underground singers on board of this ambitious project. Paul Randolph (known, among other things, for his brilliant collaborations with Jazzanova), Neve (aka Alexa Voss from superb folkish duo Neve Naive), Pete Joseph or Kasar, bring a delicate soulful touch to the duo's elegant sound, made of groovy mid-tempo beats and haunting synths melodies. 

Rarely exceeding the 110bpm speed limit, Lux will lull you into a delightful state of oblivion. Is it warm-up time? or a hazy after-party just before sunrise? who knows, who cares, truly deep house music is all what's left...and one of the most beautiful house record of the year !

Passés maîtres dans l'art d'inventer des atmosphères slo-mo house rêveuses, Alexander Kastner & Adrian Hoffman ont rassemblé une bien belle équipe de chanteurs pour mener à bien leur projet le plus ambitieux à ce jour. Paul Randolph (qu'on connait entre autres pour ses remarquables collaborations avec Jazzanova), Neve (aka Alexa Voss, chanteuse de l'excellent duo world/folk Neve Naive), Pete Joseph ou Kasar apportent, chacun à leur façon, une délicate note soulful  à l'élégante house du duo.
Les beats lancinants et les mélodies envoûtantes de synthés défilent. On excède rarement les 110 bpm, et ça tombe bien. C'est la vitesse idéale pour se laisser bercer, puis perdre peu à peu pied. Est-ce le warm-up? ou un after brumeux au petit matin? qui sait, et qui s'en souciera... ne reste que l'empreinte indélébile d'un des plus jolis disques house de l'année.
