A classic song from the legendary 1971 album Sticky Fingers, Cant You Hear Me Knocking embeds a classic Stones rock cut and a phenomenal Santana-like groovy instrumental jam.
Mick Taylor later explained that this second part was not planned at all. Thinking the recording session was over, he started improvising and the band followed on. The sax and congas bringing this latin/groove feel to the jam.
Released in 1983 as part of the Dádiva album, Rio Babilônia is not as famous as the Taj Mahal / Filho Maravilha / Pais Tropical song, which was the highlight of this LP. It is nevertheless a joyful love message written by Jorge Ben to his incredible hometown. Here is my drummed up edit of it.

Passionate about Brazilian music, French musician/producer Pierre Barouh did a lot to popularize it in France during its golden age, in the sixties/early seventies.
Case in point, in 1966, when he revisited Baden Powell & Vinicius de Moraes classic song, Samba da Bênção, for the soundtrack of legendary "Nouvelle Vague" movie, Un Homme et Une Femme, by director Claude Lelouch.

1998 French craze aside, I don't think I took that much pleasure following a World Cup since Mexico 1986. The little kid I was back then, was captivated by south-american colourful stadiums atmospheres, and subsequently became addicted to great football moments for life.

After the fantastic Brand New Revolution EP (part of Vibes4YourSoul 2012 Favoritesselection), french beatmaker Guts is already back with another treat.
His Django Remix EP is an exotic mixture of 2 overlooked soul & groove gems remixes & 2 original tracks.
Starting with a remix of Luis Bacalov' 1966 song Django (made famous recently Quentin Tarantino recent western), the EP goes on with a sweet downtempo rework of a classic 90's jazzy downtempo brazilian track, Technova from Towa Tei.
Then come two classic Guts surprises. First a groovy latin groove, Mambo Flying Party, then a (well-titled) joyful easy listening track, Music For Fun.

Here is another nice discovery we owe to the currently red-hot Wah Wah 45s label.
Originally released in 1979 and famous mostly to hard-core jazz/funk vinyl collectors, Haitian pianist Henri-Pierre Noël's album Piano is a furious piece of 70's disco/jazz fusion with an exotic carribean rythmic flava.
Nicely re-mastered by the UK label with the addition of a previously unreleased vocal version of the explosive track Merci Bon Dieu, it is now re-issued and should rejoice a whole new generation of latin groove lovers.

Voilà une nouvelle jolie découverte que l'on doit au décidément très en verve label anglais Wah-Wah 45s. Sorti en 1979 et connu principalement des collectionneurs acharnés de vinyls jazz/funk underground, l'album Piano du musicien Haitien Henri-Pierre Noëlest une pépite de fusion disco/jazz assaisonnée de subtils rythmes d'origines caribéens. Re-masterisé brillamment par le label britannique, qui en a profité pour y ajouter une version vocale inédite de l'explosif Merci Bon Dieu, l'album est maintenant "re-issued " et devrait vite réjouir une nouvelle génération d'amoureux de latin-grooves.

Already well known for their energetic jazz break beats project Renegades Of Jazz, producer David Hanke set up Mankoora with Alexander Bednasch and Loopez to focus on latin-influenced vibes.
This first EP is all about freaky percussions, red-hot horns lines and funky keyboards lines. A sure dancefloor winner !

The name of Ray Lugo may not instantly ring a bell but if you enjoy freaky afrobeat sounds then you're necessaraly familiar with this explosive musician/producer who happens to be the founder of NY-based Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra.
Alongside Brooklyn-based Antibalas, the band is one of the cornerstone of a new Afrobeat scene that has been on fire for the last 10 years.
With an exotic musical background that owes as much to The Clash or Fela Kuti than it does to the Nuyorican latin scene, Ray Lugo is now pursuing a solo project with a first LP due out later this year on up-and-coming label Jazz&Milk from Munich, Germany.
As an appetizer he is now releasing a first EP titled Bahia Love with two coulourful housy tracks full of spicy flavas and a few remixes, notably by Brownswood's crew pillar Simbad.
Reminiscent of the cool latin/funk house sounds from Nickodemus, the EP is soulful and extremely cheerful.
Looks like this year, summer has come early in southern Germany !

Cuban
artistic patronage project Havana Cultura is back in the spotlights with the
release of a second double-LP titled “Havana Cultura : The Search Continues”.
Still supervised by Gilles Peterson and legendary pianist Roberto Fonseca with some extra help from UK music DJs/producers Simbad and
Mala, this new LP is once again split in two parts.
The first
disc sees the Havana Cultura band and a host of vocals guests from the up-and-coming cuban scene (like hip-hop singer Danay and rap duo Ogguere) deliver another innovative series of afro-cuban tracks joining the dots between classic rythms from the island (rumba, cha-cha, "son", latin-jazz) and contemporary sounds (soul, hip-hop).
Featuring great latin covers of western soul classics (like the amazing version of Eddie Kendricks "My People...Hold On" reinvented by Danay under the title "Espera...Mi Gente" ) but also original compositions, this disc benefits first and foremost from the absolutely bewitching piano sound from Roberto Fonseca. An absolute thrill!
The second disc is a compilation of tracks from young cuban artists mostly coming from La Havana's rap, hip-hop & reggaeton scenes. More experimental and slightly less accessible, the selection nevertheless contains a few hidden gems like Danay's splendid song "Yo Aprendi".
The band and some of his guest singers are currently touring in Europe (they'll be in Paris on November 21st for instance). Having enjoyed their first tour two years ago, I strongly recommend you to go discover them live!

What a crazy latin party!
For its Parisian debut, Ny-based band La Excelenciachose the best possible venue, the New Morning, where it delivered its red-hot salsa message.
One of the most exciting combo in Big Apple, La Excelencia has really made a name for itself last year with the release of their outstanding second LP "Mi Tumbao Social".
Their trademark? a rough and powerful sound reminiscent or 60's/70's salsa dura's golden age with strong afro-influence, combined with thoughtful socially-conscious lyrics.
I was really excited to finally be able to see them on stage and the resulting latin hurricane did not disappoint my high expectations!

They presented themselves in a 10-member formation (slightly smaller than the full combo) : 1 keyboard, 1 bass, 3 percussionists, 2 trombones, 2 trumpets, 1 lead singer.
They focused on their original tracks, alternating between high-tempo "salsa dura" tracks and a few relatively lower-tempo rumba/mambo-style tunes.

I enjoyed their musical excellence, I loved the pulsating rythmic frame powered by their trio of percussionists, I was stunned by their mind-blowing horn section or the catchy vocals of Edwin Pérez, but what really impressed me most was the freshness, enthusiasm and energy of the ensemble. You can easily feel how much these guys are hungry and happy to support the original salsa sound heritage.
An outstanding live moment really and neither the bunch of parisian salsa-schools members who kept moving on the dancefloor nor my 6-year old daughter (who was attending her first New-Morning gig) will disagree!

L'une des formations les plus prometteuses de la mythique scène latino new-yorkaise, le groupe a vraiment commencé à se faire un nom l'an passé avec la sortie de son brilliant second album "Mi Tumbao Social". Sa marque de fabrique? un son authentique teinté de fortes influences afro qui rappelle la salsa dura des années 60/70, période dorée du genre, mais aussi des paroles engagées évoquant une multitude de thèmes sociaux et politiques. C'est une formation quasi au complet qui était présente hier soir avec 10 membres : 1 clavier, 1 basse, 3 percussionists, 2 trombones, 2 trompettes, 1 chanteur Ils ont interprété principalement des morceaux du dernier album, compositions originales qui alternent entre des morceaux de pure salsa dura aux rythmes rapides et des tracks mid-tempo rappelant la rumba ou le mambo. Si j'ai aimé la base rythmique infernale assurée par le trio de percussionistes, si j'ai été transporté par les riffs démentiels de la section de cuivres ou par le flow explosif du chanteur Edwin Pérez, ce qui m'a le plus marqué est sans aucun doute la fraîcheur, l'enthousiasme et l'énergie du groupe. Ce combo a faim d'émotions et ça se sent! Un live exceptionnel vraiment, et je pense que ni les danseurs de multiples clubs salsas de la capitale présents hier soir, ni ma pitchoune de 6 ans (qui découvrait pour l'occasion le New Morning) ne me contrediront! Will Holland aka Quantic is one of my favorite musician/producer from the latin/world/funk space. Currently living in Cali, Colombia, he keeps on digging into a wide range of overlooked latin sounds that he rejuvenates helped by a host of outstanding musicians. Following his 2009 project with his "Combo Barbaro" that gave birth to one of our favorite LP from last year "Tradition In Translation" he recently released another sunny exotic album with his "Flowering Inferno" side.
"Dog With A Rope", released on the excellent label "Tru Thoughts", focuses on the interactions of Jamaican rythms (reggae/rocksteady/dub) with latin music (notably cumbia and rumba).
With the participation (among others) of reggae veteran Conrad Kelly (Steel Pulse, UB40) and legendary Peruvian pianist Alfredo Linares, this project reminds us how close and intertwined these two musical universes are.
Accordion (often present in colombian cumbian songs), classic reggae drums, rocksteady/dub reverb effects or rumba horns fit naturally together. In fact if most tracks are covers from latin or reggae oldies thay all sounds as if they had originally been written in this exotic way. "Dog with a Rope" is another very high-quality piece of music from Mr Holland that will probably be a nice surprise to both reggae and latin music fans!

J'ai souvent mentionné le musicien et producteur Quantic (Will Holland) sur le blog tant ses multiples projets entre soul, funk et musiques latines sont à la fois séduisants et novateurs.
Après son superbe disque "Tradition In Translation" produit en 2009 avec son "Combo Barbaro" , il a sorti au début de l'été dernier une nouvelle pépite intitulée "Dog With A Rope" sur l'excellent label Tru Thoughts cette fois-ci avec son projet "Flowering Inferno". Toujours installé à Cali en Colombie, Quantic continue d'y défricher les multiples racines de la musique sud-américaine. Avec "Dog With A Rope" il s'intéresse tout particulièrement aux liens très forts unissant l'univers de la musique Jamaicaine à celui de la musique latine.
Aidé par un vétéran du reggae, Conrad Kelly (Steel Pulse, UB40) et une fois encore par le légendaire pianiste péruvien Alfredo Linares, il nous offre quelques titres originaux et plusieurs réinterprétations de vieux morceaux reggae ou latins en mélangeant les sons des deux familles musicales.
En écoutant l'accordéon (souvent présent dans la cumbia colombienne), les rythmes de batterie purement reggae, les effets réverbs venant du dub ou les cuivres de la rumba cubaine se mêler avec tant de naturel on se rend compte à quel point ces rythmiques participent d'une même grande famille.
Ce disque surprenant est tout simplement réjouissant!

Brilliantly contributing to the legendary nyc salsa music scene since 2000, Spanish Harlem Orchestra is releasing its fourth album, right on time to celebrate its 10th birthday.
Produced by bandleader and legendary pianist Oscar Hernandez on Concord Picante Records, "Viva La Tradicion" blends incendiary salsa tunes with impeccable latin jazz cuts.
Tracks like "La Salsa Dura" or "La Fiesta Empezo" will have you move and try to remember those basic salsa/rumba steps that I'm sure you learned someday!
With this outstanding release the 13-member combo (5 horns, 1 piano, 3 vocals, 1 bass and 3 percs among which Luisito Quintero well-known to Nuyorican Soul and Maw fans) confirms it is one of the best contemporary salsa/latin jazz band around.

Depuis sa création en 2000 le Spanish Harlem Orchestra s'est imposé comme un des groupes phares d'une scène salsa new-yorkaise qui ne dort jamais vraiment.
Emmené par le pianiste vétéran Oscar Hernandez qui a joué depuis 40 ans avec les plus grands (notamment Ruben Blades), le combo rassemble 13 musiciens de grand talent (entre autres le percussioniste Luisito Quintero que les fans de Nuyorican Soul et des diverses productions de Louie Vega connaissent bien).
Alternant une salsa/rumba explosive avec des titres plus latin-jazz leur quatrième album, intitulé "Viva La Tradicion" est une fois encore une belle réussite, il sort sur le label Concord Picante.
Des morceaux comme "La Salsa Dura" ou "La Fiesta Empezo" sont des invitations à la danse et à une bonne humeur à laquelle ils nous ont habitué avec leurs excellents albums précédents. Ce 4ème disque confirme avec brio que "SHO" est un des meilleurs ensembles salsa du moment.
