V4YS Concert Review - Robert Glasper Experiment - Live at New Morning - Paris, 210511

Robert Glasper, photo Vincent B.
Casey Benjamin, photo Vincent B.

Chris Dave, photo Vincent B.
Derrick Hodge, photo Vincent B.

If frontiers between Jazz, Soul & Hip-Hop do exist, Robert Glasper and his inseparable mates from the RG Experiment project, Chris DaveDerrick Hodge et Casey Benjamin, probably never stop at the customs desk.
During the 3-h long show that took place last saturday night at the New Morning in Paris, they once again blew up the very concept of "musical genre" with a phenomenal trip to a fantasy land where geniuses like Coltrane, Roy Ayers, Stevie Wonder or Jay Dilla share the centerstage.
Behind his piano and rhodes, Robert Glasper leads his quartet with a relaxed attitude and a lot of humor to take it wherever he feels it. From demanding free-jazz moments to incredible groove cuts where 4 or 5 notes of a soul or hip-hop classic are enough material to create bluffing 15-mn long tracks, you never know what's gonna happen next. One thing is for sure the "Rg Experiment" couldn't choose a better name!
A Love Supreme" by Coltrane, "A Tear To A Smile" by Roy Ayers, "Twice" by Little Dragon, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, "The Light" and "Fall In Love" by Jay Dilla or "Superwoman" by Stevie Wonder....here are some of the songs that got reinvented during the show through a very coherent approach.
The world-class talent of musicians like Chris Dave (who really is the "Daddy" of drumming even though he pretends to hate when Robert nicknames him this way), Casey Benjamin (who brillantly rescucitate a somehow unfairly forgotten instrument, the vocoder) and Derrick Hodge allows their boldness. Whatever they try, it always seems to works!
They go back to the studio next summer to record a second album under the "Experiment" umbrella, in the meantime try to catch them live, and enjoy the trip!

You'll find above a couple of small video extracts : "Twice" from Little Dragon followed by "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from Nirvana, and then "Superwoman" from Stevie Wonder followed by "Fall In Love" and "The Light" from Jay Dilla.

V4YS Concert Review - ToroY Moi & Beat Connection - Live At Point Ephémère, Paris - 160511

Following "Causers Of This" (see our 2010 favorite records selection) and "Underneath The Pine", his second album released earlier this year, Toro Y Moi (aka Chaz Bundick) made a name for himself in a US abstract beats scene bustling with activity. Still, as often with this kind of home-studio-like music, you never know how it will sound on stage.
Chaz Bundick chooses the funky way, and it works! Last monday at the Point Ephémère in Paris he was supported by a "real" rythmic section of three musicians (drums, bass, guitar), playing himself "real" keyboards to offer a very refreshing live version of his productions. The main digital add-ons are the inevitable vocal effects giving an exquisite ethereal touch to the ensemble. If the Beach Boys were set up in 2011 I bet they would sound a bit like this!

Electro-pop Seattle-based duo Beat Connection introduced Toro Y Moi concert.
Closer to a pure live electro set centered around laptops and samplers, their show was nevertheless supplemented with a few live percussions and electric guitar riffs. If their productions are not totally innovative, their are nevertheless definitely worth checking out. A nice snapshot on their soundcloud site.

Thank you to Robert Gil for his great pictures. You can check his great internet site photoconcerts.com  for more!

V4YS Album Review - Owiny Sigoma Band - Owiny Sigoma Band LP (Brownswood Recordings)

Following the explosive new album of Seun Kuti, here comes a second 2011 afro-storm with the eponymous first album of Owiny Sigoma Band !

Over the years african music fans have been used to enjoy productions from the western part of the continent (Nigeria, Ghana, Benin, Mali, Senegal... ) but oddly enough sounds from eastern Africa have generally remained more confidential. With this first production half-kenyan collective Owiny Sigoma Band nevertheless proves that oriental Africa also probably abounds with musical treasures.
Revealed and produced by Gilles Peterson on his brilliant Brownswood Recordings label, the group is actually half east-african and half-european.
On one side stands London-based Jesse Hackett known for his participation in Gorillaz as well as his interesting Elmore Judd soul/beats project, on the other a group of Nairobi-based musicians led by Joseph Nyanmungu and his traditional 8-stringed lyre. Add to that the presence on a couple of tracks of Damon Albarn, whose love for afrobeat is well-known (think of his previous collaborations with Fela's legendary drummer Tony Allen) and you get a very original kind of afro-disco sound.
The omnipresence of the Nyatiti lyre (an essential instrument in traditional Kenyan music) gives to this album a delightfully exotic touch, but it is his brilliant association with infectious percussions and house-like beats & basslines that results in Owiny Sigoma's really fresh sound. Tracks like "Wires", "Margaret Okudo", "Doyoi  Nyajo Nam" or "Nabed Nade Ei Piny Ka - Rework" sound like no other previous productions and should not leave many listeners stand still.
But there is more! This LP is also home of a few remarkable afro-folk ballads ("Here On The Line", "Gone Thum Mana Gi Nyadhi"...), truly out-of-time moments lost somewhere between London....and Nairobi !

Below a few extracts from Brownswood records soundcloud page :

V4YS Album Review - The Revenge - Reekin'Structions & 6th Borough Project - One Night In The Borough

Anyone loving groovy underground house and so-called "nudisco" sounds has probably heard of Graeme Clark or one of his many different projects (The Revenge, Ooft, 6th Borough Project...). The Glasgow-based producer has consistently been releasing killer grooves for the last 3 or 4 years. His specialty? Re-Editing classic gems and creating irresistible slo-mo undergound house beats.
Following countless great EPs and remixes, he now changes gears to simultaneously release his first two LPs, Reekin'structions and One Night In The Borough.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's start with Reekin'structions, out now on Z Records.
Produced under his The Revenge alias, this album is a compilation of disco/funk re-edits in which Graeme brilliantly demonstrates that editing truly is an art.
Starting with a very interesting selection of mostly overlooked 70s & 80s rare grooves, he manages to retain each track's original soulfulness while adding a subtle house touch by alternatively rejuvenating basslines, drums or synth layers.
His rework of Lletta Mbulu timeless disco anthem "Kilimanjaro" probably is the best example of this editing talent, but his edits of tracks like Nel Oliver's Dream On or Johnny Adams' Feel The Beat also show his ability to ignite dancefloors with slower-tempo grooves.
Editing with a capital "E", period!

Courtesy of The Revenge's soundcloud page, please find below a streaming of the album :

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then comes the LP "One Night In The Borough"  from 6th Borough Project on the excellent label Delusions Of Grandeur.
6th Borough is Graeme's house side, a project he set up in 2008 with Edinburgh-based veteran Dj & producer Craig Smith.
This Lp only features new material covering the various  underground house styles 6th Borough has accustomed its fans in the remarkable series of EPs released since their debut.
From slo-mo cuts ("Deep C", "If The Feeling Right" which nicely samples Leon Ware's legendary song "Rockin You Eternally"), to mid-tempo house tracks  ("Burt The Journey", "Back To Me"...) or darker uptempo moments ("Iznae", "Burt Inside") the album is a condensed version of a great house night, neglecting neither the warm-up nor the dawn hours!

V4YS Album Review - Matthew Halsall - On The Go (Gondwana Records)

There is a bit of Coltrane and Miles in Matthew Halsall new album, "On The Go".
There is also a bit of Cinematic Orchestra or Erik Truffaz.
This assertion will not surprise his fans. Since the release of his first record, "Sending My Love", in 2008, the Manchester-based trumpeter has developped a sound of his own that brillantly bridges classic and "nu" jazz. Out on the independant label Gondwana Records, his third LP is once again a phenomenal piece of music.  Backed by a remarkable rythmic section (Gaz Hughes on the drums, Gavin Barars at the bass, Adam Fairhall at the piano) and occasionnally entering hypnotic dialogs with Nat Birchall's saxophones and Rachael Gladwin' harp, his graceful trumpet always spreads deep waves of emotions.
It's definitely not a coincidence if two songs titles borrow some Buddhist terminology (The End Of DukkhaSamatha). If meditation is one of the first word that comes to mind when mentioning this religion, it works as well when one listens to Matthew's work. Spiritual jazz with a soulful edge!
Several uk gigs are planned (see here), I hope Matthew will soon extend that to the other side of the Channel.

Below a deezer streaming of my two favorite tracks, "The Move" & "Samatha" :
I also suggest you to check out his soundcloud page where he regularly puts on line amazing unreleased material.

V4YS Concert Review - James Blake / Cloud Boat - Live At La Maroquinerie, Paris, 250411

James Blake

Rob McAndrews & Ben Assiter

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was eagerly awaiting James Blake first parisian gig to see if he could convey live as much pureness and emotions as he does through his ambitious studio productions blending folk and dubstep vibes.
This finally happened this week at the cosy Maroquinerie venue in northern Paris where James offered a captivating 1h-long set, supported by a drummer (Ben Assiter) and a guitarist/sampler (Rob McAndrews).
Starting slowly with almost too clean versions of “Unluck”, “Give Me My Month” or “Tep & The Logic”, the show really took off with “I Never Learnt To Share”, magnificently sung through a cascade of live vocals samples and effects.
The other major highlight of the set was the explosive cut of “Klavierwierke” where his keyboard’s powerful bass layers answered the fierce dubstep rythms from Ben Assister's electronic drums. As the track progressed toward its climax, I almost thought I was lost in the middle of  London-based Plastic People's dark dancefloor where quality dubstep rules!
After an energetic interpretation of his now famous Feist cover “Limit To Your Love”, the trio ended the evening on a more intimate note with “The Wilhelm Scream” and a beautiful unreleased track performed by Blake alone at the piano.
The experimental charasteristics of his productions make live acts all the more difficult to conceive and perform. Thanks to his remarkable singing talent as well as his outstanding arranging work, James Blake brillantly manages to give a second birth to his brillant album on stage. Don’t miss his forthcoming dates!

Cloud Boat :
The other pleasant surprise of the evening was London-based duoCloud Boat, who opened the show with a short but really promessing set.
Baffling samples, languorous vocals, delicate electro beats, hints of electric guitar, I would describe their sound as some kind of  futuristic abstract-folk reminiscent in some way of artists like Blake (of course) or Mount Kimbie. The band is due to release a first Ep on R&S Record in coming weeks and should definitely be added to your watchlist.
Please find above an extract of the forthcoming Ep, “Lions On The Beach” :

V4YS Concert Review - Brass Construction - Live At New Morning, Paris, 210411

April 2011 in Paris is hot. Both in temperature and great concerts.
Following Roy Ayers 2 weeks ago, another cornerstone of the 70’s Us soul/funk scene rocked the New Morning house yesterday.
Five years after their last Parisian appearance, Brass Construction was in town for the first round of back-to-back nights starring 4 original members of  the Brooklyn band set-up in 1968 by Randy Muller : Moriss Price (trumpet, vocals), Larry Payton (drums, vocals), Sandy Billups (percussions, vocals) & Michael Grudge (bass, vocals).
Supported by 4 additional musicians (1 guitar, 2 keyboards, 1 trumpet) the band offered a freaky 2h-long show full of timeless funk anthems.
From Changin’ to Ha Cha Cha, What’s On Your Mind or the legendary Movin’, they made room to most of their classics with live versions full of energy but also simplicity and humor.

Unlike some old glories of the Soul scene who fail to live up to their legend after so many years performing, these grandfaters of funk are still faithful to their festive and convivial approach in which at least three generations of fans now recognize itself!
These gentlemen will surely still have us "movin" for a long time to come!

Please find above two shorts  video extracts of the concert, a quick brass impro in between two songs and " Movin’ " of course.

V4YS Ep Review - Jacques Greene - Another Girl Ep (LuckyMe Records)

I have to drop a quick line about an extremely creative young electro producer named Jacques Greene.
After "The Look", a first Ep released last January on LuckyMe Records, whose underground house vibes were spiced up with a hint of Uk-style dubstep beats, the Montreal-based producer recently released what could be one of the great electro track of the year.
"Another Girl" is a deep dubstep gem subtly sampling vocals from "Deuces", actually a rather average R&B track from Us-singer Ciara.
The obsessing chorus, addictive dubstep beats, and powerful synth lines are simply irresistible!
Add a great remix of his track "The look" by Koreless (a promessing Glasgow-based producer I also strongly advise you to check out) and you get an essential Ep.
Below streaming of "Another Girl" :

Streaming d'une "Another Girl" ravageuse ci-dessus.

V4YS Concert Review - Bonobo Live Band Feat. Andreya Triana - Live At Le Trianon, Paris, 130411

Andreya Triana, Le Trianon, Apr11

Andreya Triana, Le Trianon, Apr11
After a series of acoustic live shows in 2010 following the release of his great 4th album "Black Sands", Bonono (aka Simon Green) is currently touring with an large orchestra featuring both a horns and a string section.
At the lovely Le Trianon theater in northern Paris, the band delivered an ambitious downtempo/nujazz show reminiscent of Cinematic Orchestra live performances.
Andreya Triana, whose name was often quoted on the blog last year following her outstanding contribution on "Black Sands" but also the release of her first LP "Lost Where I Belong", was also there to add her folksy soulful vocals on several tracks. Alternating songs from Simon earlier productions (mosty notably fom the famous LP "Dial M For Monkey") and from "Black Sands", they presented a finely-worked orchestration where the only thing missing to me was a hint of improvisation.
Worth mentionning as well was the brilliant contribution of Submotion Orchestra singer Ruby Wood on two tracks. I actually highly recommend anyone not familiar with this Leeds-based electro-jazz band to check their outstanding first Ep "Finest Hour", a promessing production anticipating their soon-to-be released first LP.

V4YS Concert Review - Roy Ayers - Live At New Morning, Paris, 110411 (1st part Setenta)

Roy Ayers, Live in Paris, Apr11

Roy Ayers, Live in Paris, Apr11

Can't You See Me, Runnin Away, Everybody Loves The Sunshine, We Live In Brooklyn Baby...).
Roy Ayers, Live in Paris, Apr11

Shame on me, I doubted.
Because of a disturbing memory from a disapointing concert a few years ago, I doubted a bit in the ability of Roy Ayers to still live up to its legend on stage. I nevertheless bought my ticket a long time ago as he is one of my musical hero alogside artists like Fela Kuti, Marvin Gaye or Curtis Mayfield
Following the mind-blowing show he offered at the New Morning in Paris last night my ridiculous concerns were obviously proven wrong!
After a really cool introductionary set from Paris-based latin-funk combo Setenta, it took only 5 minutes and a groovy version of Searchin' for Roy and his legendary vibraphone to set the room on fire.
Supported by a top-quality band (John Pressley backing vocals, Donald Nicks  bass, Raeford Gaskins keyboards/sax, Lee Pearson II drums, Tony Smith guitar and Chief Udoh Essiet  percussions) he delighfully interpreted several of his timeless classics (Can't You See MeRunnin AwayEverybody Loves The SunshineWe Live In Brooklyn Baby...).
Showing a communicative enthusiasm and energy, he also left ample room to let his talented musicians express themselves through furious solos.
The highlight of the set to me was a 20mn-long version of "Black Family", a brilliant wink at the afrobeat anthems of his friend Fela.
To get a small idea of the atmosphere, you'll find above a video of "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" (sorry for the poor sound quality). Those who, like me, are addicted to this legendary song may also enjoy checking my recent special selection gathering my favorites covers of the track with streaming and dwnld links for each.

V4YS Album Review - Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 - From Africa With Fury: Rise (Knitting Factory Records)

Seun Kuti, Live at La Défense, March2011 - Photo Vincent B.
Almost 3 years ago Seun Kuti knocked-out by surprise many afrobeat fans with his first album "Many Things" recorded with his father legendary band, Egypt 80.
Truthful to Fela's politically-conscious tone while also echoing on stage his remarkable charisma and energy, he quickly became a leader of a currently blooming new afrobeat scene (more on this musical space with our recent podcast "Long Live Afrobeat").

From Africa With Fury: Rise”, his second album out now Knitting Factory Records, is another essential production bringing together Afrobeat best recipe : a ferocious message supported by ferocious afro-grooves.Recorded in Rio De Janeiro and supervised (among others) by the legendary producer Brian Eno, the spirit of this record can be summarized with a simple extract from a recent interview  he gave to Afrobeat Diaries : That's what music should be. Pop music today is all about me, me, me. Nobody is singing about we. But nothing can change if we don't look out for our brothers and sisters."

Seun Kuti, March2011 - Photo Vincent B.
At a time where many African populations are courageously standing up against outdated regimes, Fela's scream denouncing dictatorships, corruption, natural resources over-exploitation…has never resonated so loudly. Using his own biting words, Seun takes up his father's torch and tries to keep on inspiring the people currently suffering in silence on the continent.
To be true, the message would not resonate so fiercely without the beats!
Infectious rythmic frames, raging horns, powerful choirs, it's almost impossible to stand still listening to this musical hurricane.
Fela was often saying that “Music will be the weapon of the future”. With "From Africa With Fury: Rise”, his son Seun once again makes the prediction self-fulfilling.
Check it out by yourself and don’t miss out the explosive forthcoming live tour!

Below streaming of "African Soldier" and "Rise" :

That's what music should be. Pop music today is all about me, me, me. Nobody is singing about we. But nothing can change if we don't look out for our brothers and sisters."

P.S : Thanks to Vincent for his great pictures taken last week in Paris.
