V4YS Ep Review - Krystal Klear & Olivier DaySoul - Never Thought You Would Go EP (Eglo Records)

Released last month, here is another splendid production from Floating Points's outstanding label Eglo Records.

Gathering Manchester-based producer Krystal Klear and american R&B singer Olivier DaySoul (notably known for his 2009 collaboaration on Hudson Mohawke LP's Butter) the EP brings us back to the 90's-kind-of-soul sounds.

Beautiful old-school synths, deep beats, vocals as soulful as you can dream of, I just love it !

Below the official video of Never Thought You Would Go :

V4YS Ep Review - Ray Lugo - Bahia Love Ep (Jazz&Milk Records)

The name of Ray Lugo may not instantly ring a bell but if you enjoy freaky afrobeat sounds then you're necessaraly familiar with this explosive musician/producer who happens to be the founder of NY-based Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra.
Alongside Brooklyn-based Antibalas, the band is one of the cornerstone of a new Afrobeat scene that has been on fire for the last 10 years.

With an exotic musical background that owes as much to The Clash or Fela Kuti than it does to the Nuyorican latin scene, Ray Lugo is now pursuing a solo project with a first LP due out later this year on up-and-coming label Jazz&Milk from Munich, Germany.

As an appetizer he is now releasing a first EP titled Bahia Love with two coulourful housy tracks full of spicy flavas and a few remixes, notably by Brownswood's crew pillar Simbad.

Reminiscent of the cool latin/funk house sounds from Nickodemus, the EP is soulful and extremely cheerful.
Looks like this year, summer has come early in southern Germany !

V4YS Album Review - Bonobo - Black Sands Remixed (Ninja Tune)

Beautifully blending his producer's unique downtempo universe with shades of UK bass music and hints of nu-soul, Bonobo's fourth LP Black sands received a much deserved praise in 2010 following its release on Ninja Tune.

24 months later the always prescient label revisits this reference record with a remixed version gathering some of the electronic music scene's most groundbreaking producers.
Floating Points, Machinedrum, Mark Pritchard, FaltyDL, just to name a few, offer us their interpretations of the original LP with a particular emphasis on the single Eyesdown which revealed at the time singer Andreya Triana.

Dubstep, house, broken and abstract beats, the spectrum of styles present in this remixed edition is wide and not only is a remarkable extension of Bonobo's work but also a perfect snapshot of some of the most innovating parts of the current electro world.

Below a couple of short extracts from Ninja Tune, Eyesdown by DELS and and Eyesdown remixed by Machinedrum :

V4YS Album Review - Robert Glasper Experiment - Black Radio (Blue Note)

Don't change channel, you're on the right frequency, this is Black Radio !

Robert Glasper (piano, Rhodes), Chris Dave (drums), Derrick Hodge (bass) & Casey Benjamin (sax, vocoder) are your hosts. Get ready for a sensory trip towards a fantasy world made up of jazz, nu-soul and hip-hop.
On their station, no commercials, only great sounds through a flurry of magical encounters between some of the hottest voices of the current R&B/Nu-Soul scene and the legacy of several legendary artists, supervised by the benevolent and indispensable influence of Jay Dilla.

Robert Glasper, New Morning, 2011, photo Vincent B.
For his 4th LP (the second one with his "groove" side called Experiment) Robert Glasper yielded to all his envies, notably adding the last missing piece of his previous musical puzzles : vocals.
Having recorded, toured and written for a wide range of singers these last few years while pursuing his own career, it's now his turn to be the conductor and invite an impressive line-up of well-known voices (Erykah Badu, Bilal, Meshell Ndegeocello, Musiq Soulchild, Lupe Fiasco, Mos Def...) as well as promessing up-and-coming artists (trio King, Ledisi, Chrisette Michele, Stokey Williams...).

Derrick Hodge, N Morning, 2011, pic Vincent B.
The album is almost evenly split between new tracks and covers of tracks from the likes of Coltrane, Sade, Nirvana, Bowie...
If anyone who has already attended one of their mind-blowing live acts will recognize their vododer-flavored cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit, they will surely discover with excitement their version of Coltrane's Afro-Blue, Sade's classic Cherish The Day or an overlooked song from David Bowie, Letter To Hermione, turned into a splendid nu-jazz balad made for love...

Next to the brillant writing and succesful direction of the many vocalists, the band also impresses with his orchestration and musical arrangements.
Glasper's piano play is at its best, alternating sweet liquid melodies and short samples-like phrasings bringing this undefinable groove to the flow.

Chris Dave, New Morning, 2011, pic Vincent B.
But the Experiment is not only about the pianist after who it is named, we're talking about a true band where Casey Benjamin, Derrick Hodge and Chris Dave's talent, class and delicacy are a
decisive factor in the project's unique sound signature.
"Daddy" Dave's drumming, for instance, is once again mind-blowing, confirming he currently is one of the most fascinating jazz/hip-hop drummer around. Anyone doubting that assertion should for instance focus on the crazy ryhmic line on Why Do We Try where rythms & counter-rythms keep swirling around in an endless carnival.

Casey Benjamin, N Morning, 2011, pic Vincent B.

Record after record, Robert Glasper and his crew keep erasing what's left of the frontiers supposedly separating the worlds of Jazz and Nu-Soul.
Black Radio, that will be released on February 28th on Blue Note,  clearly is their most accomplised effort to date. An essential album, as should be the tour starting now and that will visit Paris next April !

Below a couple of extracts, Letter To Hermione (David Bowie cover feat. Bilal) & Cherish The Day (Sade cover feat. Lalah Hathaway).

V4YS Ep Review - Saux - Rear Window Ep

Amsterdam-based producer Saux designs cool modern grooves with subtle jazz & soul influences.

Released a few days ago, his second self-produced EP titled Real Window is a mandatory remedy for anyone short warmth and smoothness during this harsh winter.

Groovy beats, fantastic synths layers and soulful lyrics on two tracks by singer Joya Mooi make up for a cheerful journey.
Last but not least the splendid vocal sample at the end of the Ep closing track, One Who Looks.

V4YS Album Review - Gregory Porter - Be Good (Motéma Music)

Back in 2010 the release of US singer Gregory Porter's first LP, Water, was at first a jaleously
kept secret by some well-informed jazz lovers.
But the record had too much in store not to quickly reach a wider audience. On top of the discovery of a remarkable voice, we could thoroughly enjoy finely tuned lyrics with a poetic and sometimes politically-conscious edge, as well as a dazzling sound oscillating between classy and afro/spiritual jazz.
All things coming to he who waits, 2011 brought a Grammy nomination and the increasing airing of the record's catchy track 1960 What? by a few good DJs, allowing for the real take-off, of a singer now even reaching out to soulful house fans thanks to the recent releases of great electro remixes.

Making hay while the sun shines, Gregory Porter is now back on Motéma Music with his sophomore album, Be Good, that sounds like a striking confirmation.

Still supported by his brillant quatuor (Chip Crawford - piano, Yosuke Sato - sax, Aaron James - bass and Emanuel Harrold - drums) the chameleon-like singer is as moving on romantic ballads (Painted On Canvas, Real Good Hands...) than he is on energetic big-band-like jazz tunes (Work Song, On My Way To Harlem) or on "bluesy" soul moments (Mother's SongThe Way You Want To Live, Good Hands...). He even dares a stunning accapella cover of Billie Holiday's standard God Bless The Child !

Following the path of a José James, Gregory Porter asserts himself as an all-round jazz/soul artist, as brillant an interpret as a witty writer. An essential production and some thrills guaranteed during his upcomong US and European tour !

Below a streaming of couple extracts, Bee Good (Lion's Song) and On My Way To Harlem :

V4YS Concert Review - Portico Quartet - Live at Café de la Danse - 060212

Duncan Bellamy
A few days after the release of their third LP (reviewed here), british nu-jazz band Portico Quartet was visiting the Café de la Danse in Paris yesterday to present their exciting new project on stage.

Focusing on this audacious record blending shades of electronic music to their now famous nu-jazz sound, the gig also gave the band the opportunity to reread some tracks from Isla, their previous album, with the help of digital add-ons.

Milos Fitzpatrick
Next to Duncan Bellamy, now almost turned into some kind of one-man band as confortable with his regular drums than with a myriad of samplers and beatboxes, we rediscovered with joy Jack Wyllie's delicate soprano sax and the spectacular contrabass from the mischievous Milo Fitzpatrick.

The famous "Hang", a rare percussion instrument that has almost become the quartet's mascot, was of course also part of the show, now being taken care of by newcomer Kier Vine also playing keyboards.

Rythm is at the forefront of Portico's new live show. Complex, powerful, fascinating, it ripples from Duncan Bellamy's drums and machines to radiate through the rest of the band notably thanks to the recurring use of loops that are either played live by the musicians or recorded and then reworked by samplers. At times the concert therefore almost hinges on a deep techno or broken beats/dubstep set, which has the audience almost regrets to be seated...

Kier Vine & Milos Fitzpatrick

But this live act is obviously not only about rythmic accomplishements.
The poetic signature of the band is still there, hanging around quieter modern-jazz moments where the hang, the soprano sax or the contrabass take control through beautiful vaporous melodies.

Jack Wyllie

In an hour and a half the band reveals some of his many shades. The new direction embracing the digital world clearly seems to open them an infinite number of gates and we can be pretty confident that this tour will allow them to dig deeper into this groundbreaking path.

Below you'll find a couple of video extratcs from the gig. First the deep Lacker Boo, and then a quieter moment with a special live moment mixing Rubidium from the lates LP with (I believe) Lines from the second album Isla :

V4YS Ep Review - Poolside Music

Considering the polar temperatures in Paris at the moment I really wish I was on the sunny american west coast, chilling to some good sounds next to a refreshing pool.
Well let's try it this way with LA-based duo Poolside Music who have consistently been spreading out amazing nudisco vibes these last few months notably through their must-follow soundcloud page.
Released in early 2011 their EP Do You Believe was a little slo-mo house jewel, their recent reworks of Sade's classic When Am I Gonne Make A Living and Neil Young's timeless Harvest Moon are simply stunning (and available for free on their page).
Go check out their so-called "daytime disco" !!!

Poolside - Harvest Moon :

Sade - When Am I Gonna Make A Living (Poolside's Tons Of Drums Edit) :

Poolside - Do You Believe :

V4YS Album Review - Tropics - Nautical Clamor

Following up on one of the chillwave/abstract beats artists I enjoyed most in 2011, here comes a sweet new gift from Uk-based producer Tropics (aka Chris Ward) who is sharing a collection of previously unreleased tracks/b-sides titled Nautical Clamor through his bandcamp page .

Dreamy atmosphere, ethereal synths layers, melancholic melodies, atmospheric beats...all the ingredients from the brillant Parodia Flare, his acclaimed first LP released last year on PlanetMu Records, are there.

Among my favorite moments, Sophomore a very deep "housy" cut where enchanting vocal samples bring an elusive blissful feeling and a remix of Parodia Flare's track Mouve whose delicately discontructed beats and acoustic guitars samples make up for a delightfully nostalgic moment.

Find below a full streaming of the album :

V4YS Ep Review - Machinedrum - SXLND Ep (LuckyMe)

One of the most unpredictable electronic music producers around, Travis Stewart feels as good working on a dubstep track than he does producing downtempo, house or more abstract beats.

One thing is certain though, whatever the style, his releases have consistently been of the highest quality whether under his Machinedrum project (with the Room(s)  LP recently part of our 2011 Favorites Records list) or his Sepalcure duo.

His new EP as Machinedrum, titled SXLND and out on LuckyMe is another great electronic music kaleidoscop ranging from dubstep sounds (SXLND, Van Vogue) to deep tech vibes (No Respect) or underground house (DDD).

Below streamings of the tracks DDD and No Respect :

Ci-dessus deux extraits en streaming, DDD and No Respect.

V4YS Ep Review - Mecca:83 - D A Y B R E A K (Solar Sounds Music)

Manchester-based producer Mecca:83 has a real talent for designing underground instrumental hip-hop with a soulful edge.

His Life Sketches EP's, released last year on his own label Solar Sounds, are remarkable bridges between "Jay-Dillesque" jazzy beats and futuristic sounds reminiscent of the current Californian abstract beats scene (think Flying-Lotus and all).
His other project, Rise, and its associated 2011 LP Messages on Futuristica Music, is a beautiful soothing trip blending shades of spiritual jazz with deep handcrafted beats.

Mecca:83 is now back on Solar Sounds Music with D A Y B R E A K, a new EP he wrote during a 24h-long beatmaking session with his inseparable friends : his laptop, his Akai MPC and a bunch of great old-school records, source of the multiple samples he keeps digging out.
A perfect summary of his artistic approach, this new EP blends groovy rythmic frames with warm sound textures where you'll enjoy wrapping and losing yourself, surrended by a myriad of beautiful keyboards/piano melodies and funky instrumental and vocal samples.

Check it out by yourself with the streaming below taken from his label's bancamp page where you'll also find his previous productions.

V4YS Album Review - Portico Quartet - Portico Quartet (Real World Records)

Portico Quartet are back with a self-titled groundbreaking new LP, out on Peter Gabriel's Real World label.

Since their beginnings in 2007 the London-based band has been associated with a mysterious nu-jazz signature sounding like no other. One of the reason is their mastering of the Hang a relatively unknown percussion instrument created 10 years ago in Switzerland and carring in some way an exotic caribbean drums flava. But their originality also lies in their ability to blend many influences into their music, reflecting their immersion into a bubbling London scene forbidding barriers between jazz, electro, broken beats or indie rock's worlds.

If the quartet line-up has changed with pianist Kier Vine replacing percussionist Nick Mulvey, the most important turn this time is the appearance of an electronic/digital dimension into their work.

This evolution hasn't been planned, it rather happened as a natural process that started on stage while touring following the release of their second LP Isla.
Sound effects, loops, samples slowly but surely appeared on these accoustic musicians's arsenal. One thing leading to another, these digital add-ons stimulated the band's creativity and became a major asset when they started to work on this third album.

As a telling example, their work on the "Hang" : if it is still present on this record, it is almost as a new instrument. Not recorded live anymore, it was mainly used through finely reworked samples, creating a totally different sound. More generally, besides the digital gimmicks, even the rythmic structure of several tracks borrows from the electro world with deep and regular drums and double-bass lines often reminiscent of the deep techno universe.

All in all here is another splendid effort by the quartet. A truly fascinating tribal feeling emanates from this record, as if jazz and trance were quietly dating to naturally end up getting married during a peaceful ceremony. Not to be missed live during their forthcoming european tour where the record should take all its dimension !

Below an extract, Spinner, as well as a little "making-of" video of the LP :

V4YS Concert Review - Stuart McCallum (Cinematic Orchestra) - Live at Sunset Jazz Club, Paris - 26/01/12

Stuart McCallum

Laurent Robin
Best known for his pillar status in Jason Swinscoe's Cinematic Orchestra, StuartMcCallum is also pursuing an exciting solo career.

Last November we reviewed his brillant second LP, Distilled, which he presented live  in Paris this week on a trio format (Laurent Robin on drums, Pete Turner on double-bass) in the cosy Sunset JazzClub.

On a cinematic-like ethereal frame made of beautiful synths and strings layers played by his laptop, the guitarist offered a a true moment of grace during two 45-mn long sets mainly focusing on the recent album.

Pete Turner

Perfectly supported by a rythmic section where I particularly enjoyed Laurent Robin's style, conveying both power and strength as well as delicacy and sweetness, Stuart once again proved he currently belongs to the most groundbreaking nu-jazz musicians of our time.

Icing on the cake, he confirmed me that a brand new Cinematic Orchestra album is almost written. Depending on the individual band members busy schedule, it should probably be recorded on Ninja Tune before the end of the year. It will feature singer Heidi Vogel and a new male vocalist as well.

Please find below two video extracts of this concert, Inflight and La Cigale, both featuring on the LP Distilled :

V4YS Concert Review - Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards - Koko, London - 210112

Now almost an institution, Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Awards party gathers every late January an astonishing host of independent artists and labels who make the bread and butter of his legendary radio show on BBC1.
Taking place for a second time in a row in Camden's baroque theater Koko, the evening exceeded once again all my expectations.
If it would be too long to come back on each and every amazing live performance that took place during the we (including friday's great warm-up party at XOYO), let's at least focus on some of my favorite moments !

Michael Kiwanuka :
His debut LP to be relased very soon will surely be one of 2012's musical highlights. In the meantime british soul/folk artist Michael Kiwanuka keeps affirming himself not only as a brillant songwriter but also as a remarkable live performer.
Offering a shortened version of the live set he currently performs  all around Europe (see here a full broadcast of his recent Rennes Transmusicales festival concert) he mesmerized the audience with his sensitive singing.
His band provides a perfect frame for his acoustic guitar with a special mention to the impact of live percussions (congas, bongos) that give an exotic "world-soul" flava to the ensemble.

Please find below a video extract from his songs Out There Alone :

Thundercat feat. Austin Peralta :
A phenomenal 6-strings bass player as well as an outstanding singer and producer, Thundercat perfectly symbolizes a futuristic groove scene that has been blooming for the last few years in California.
His first LP The Golden Age Of Apocalypse was definitely one of 2011 most groundbreaking productions, fitting perfectly on Flying Lotus's ambitious Brainfeeder label. Playing live for the first time in the Uk, he delivered a spiffy show helped by several world-class artists like 21-year old pianist Austin Peralta (whose first three jazz albums are all must-have), singer Andreya Triana (famous for her multiple collaborations with Bonobo) or singer Heidi Vogel from Cinematic Orchestra.

Catch a glimpse of it with the videos extracts below, For Love I Come and Seasons :

The Pyramids :
As he likes to describe it, Gilles Peterson's worldwide radio show consistently joins the dots between many musical worlds. But it also bridges the generational gaps by constantly mixing brand new productions with old-school sounds that are a part of our musical heritage.
Illustrating this approach his idea to invite legendary spiritual/afro jazz band The Pyramids to perform during the evening in anticipation of the release of a new album in te coming months.
Led by their charismatic founder Idris Ackamoor the band offered a priceless spiritual moment and demonstrated how timeless their early 70's work are.

Below an extract of their classic track Memory Ritual with a phenomenal sax solo from Mr Ackamoor :

BadBadNotGood :
A few weeks ago I highlighted here the first self-produced Ep from this very young canadian trio. Blending a groovy nu-jazz sound with live hip-hop-inspired drums their sound recalls many treats we enjoy (from Jay Dilla to the Robert Glasper Experiment..).
Seemingly very happy to be offered the opportunity to play for the first time in Europe, the trio confirmed through their enthusiastic and energetic sets at XOYO on friday and Koko on saturday that they are a name to watch in coming months.
Below an extract from their XOYO gig :

Next to these jazz/soul/beats live acts, the uk electro scene was very much in focus.
Among the highlights a very convincing live act from Sbtrkt and Sampha whose 2011 self-titled LP definitely is one of my favorite 2011 records. Adding live drums and percussions to their deep dubstep songs is a tasty soulful recipe. Such was the beautiful song performed with the support of Little Dragon's singer Yukimi Nagano.
Finally I can't end this post without mentionning the stunning slo-mo house DJ set by Julio Bashmore who definitely is becoming a cornerstone of the current underground house scene.

I was about to forget, some awards were given by Gilles during the evening...but who cares won what right? The real winner of the night was Music with a capital M !
That's it for this year. If you now (hopefully) wish you had come to this amazing night I strongly suggest you contemplate visiting the Worldwide Festival that will take place the first week of July in Sète (south of France). The line-up should be as good !

Thanks again to Gilles, Peggy, LeFtO and all the crew at Brownswood/Bbc for setting up this amazing night of music !
