Josh Kumra - Waiting For You (Cinematic Remix)

Here is a powerful uk garage from London duo Cinematic. They beautifully rework Waiting For You, a futuristic folk cut from up-and-coming british songwriter Josh Kumra who will by the way release his first LP early next year.

Old-school NY-style House sound, deep bass and an amazing work on vocal samples makes this track a sure dancefloor winner.

V4YS EP Review - The 1975 - Sex Ep (Dirty Hit Records)

Here is a nice indie/pop EP from Manchester-based band The 1975.

Alternating between energetic moments like Sex and more melancholic atmospheres like Undo or You, the EP also gave birth to a beautiful freely downloadable deep-house version from Hackman whom we came to know earlier this year thanks to his magical Forgotten Notes single.

V4YS Album Review - Henri-Pierre Noël - Piano (Reissue - Wah-Wah 45's)

Here is another nice discovery we owe to the currently red-hot Wah Wah 45s label.

Originally released in 1979 and famous mostly to hard-core jazz/funk vinyl collectors, Haitian pianist Henri-Pierre Noël's album Piano is a furious piece of 70's disco/jazz fusion with an exotic carribean rythmic flava.

Nicely re-mastered by the UK label with the addition of a previously unreleased vocal version of the explosive track Merci Bon Dieu, it is now re-issued and should rejoice a whole new generation of latin groove lovers.

Voilà une nouvelle jolie découverte que l'on doit au décidément très en verve label anglais Wah-Wah 45s.
Sorti en 1979 et connu principalement des collectionneurs acharnés de vinyls jazz/funk underground, l'album Piano du musicien Haitien Henri-Pierre Noël est une pépite de fusion disco/jazz assaisonnée de subtils rythmes d'origines caribéens. Re-masterisé brillamment par le label britannique, qui en a profité pour y ajouter une version vocale inédite de l'explosif Merci Bon Dieu, l'album est maintenant "re-issued " et devrait vite réjouir une nouvelle génération d'amoureux de latin-grooves.

V4YS Concert Review - Chris Dave & The Drumhedz - Live at New Morning, Paris - 191112

"Keep an open-mind and imagine you're spending the night digging records in your favorite underground music store" is roughly how Chris Dave introduced his live project with his musicians from the Drumhedz yesterday night ath the New Morning in Paris.

Well, a hell of a records store that was !

The kind of joint offering white labels of crazy free-jazz versions of Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillepsie, Jimi Hendrix, Fela Kuti, Blondie or 90's Hip-Hop classics.

The kind of place you'd not want to leave at closing time, even after a 2h30mn-long torrent of  beats.

The kind of place you don't really find anymore in fact...except in Chris Dave's fantasy music world !

Displaying once again his phenomenal drumming skills, discontructing, reconstructing, discontructing again to reconstruct another way any rythmic line, he also managed to build a strong band around him.

If I already knew charismatic sax/flute player Kebbi Williams from Chris' previous visit in Paris in 2011, I discovered with an incredulous feeling the brillant bass player Jermaine Williams and guitar whizz-kid Isaiah "Sharkey" Thomas, whose complicity with our favorite drummer is simply joyful.

"Imaginez simplement que vous passez la soirée chez votre disquaire favori, à piocher sans préjugé au hasard de bacs remplis de pépites". Tel est en gros la façon dont le génial batteur Chris Dave a introduit hier soir au New Morning son nouveau projet live avec ses compères du Drumhedz.

Vous parlez d'un disquaire ! Le genre d'endroit où l'on tombe sur une ribambelle de reprises déjantées façon free-jazz d'Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillepsie, Jimi Hendrix, Fela Kuti, Blondie ou d'airs Hip-Hop sortis des 90's. Le genre de shop où vous aurez tendance à supplier pour gratter encore 10mn d'écoute à l'heure de la fermeture. Bref le genre d'endroit qui n'éxiste plus trop de nos jours...sauf dans le monde musical parallèle de mister Dave !

Une fois de plus absolument incroyable à la batterie, il n'en finit plus de détruire, reconstruire, détruire encore pour reconstruire de mille autres façons un nombre infini de lignes rythmiques. Il est aussi devenu un réel band leader, sachant s'entourer et emmener dans son tourbillon créatif des musiciens incroyables. Si je connaissais le charismatique saxophoniste Kebbi Williams qui l'accompagnait déjà lors de sa précedente venue l'an passé, j'ai découvert ahuri le bassiste Jermaine Williams et surtout le prometteur guitariste Isaiah "Sharkey" Thomas dont la complicité avec Chris est juste jouissive.

Peut-être le meilleur concert que j'ai vu cette année !

V4YS Album Review - Stubborn Heart - Stubborn Heart (One Little Indian Records)

British duo Stubborn Heart (aka Luca Santucci & Ben Fitzgerald) dub their style "electronic soul music", underlining their love of 60/70's Soul music as well as Uk Indie/pop and contemporary electro worlds.

Following their stunning 201 anthem Need Someone, they are releasing a shimmering first self-titled LP on One Little Indian Records.

Evoking the post-dubstep sound of SBTRKT & Sampha as well as the lo-fi atmosphere of Portishead or the more adventurous productions of Radiohead & The XX, this album is the latest example of the fascinating artistic combinations at work inside the Uk musical scene.

If the duo thrives at crafting sophisticated beats & warm keyboards-based melodies, their vocal performance is their authentic trademark. Melancholic, sensual and intimately wholehearted, it resonates deeply, very, very deeply down inside.

V4YS Album Review - Flume - Flume (Future Classic Recordings)

Last but not least Future Classic's youngest artist, Flume, is also releasing an eagerly anticipated self-titled first LP !

After his brillant Sleepless EP, the 20-years-old producer offers a captivating album blowing up the frontiers between between slo-mo house, abstract beats and bass music.

Thriving on designing subtle rythmic lines, Flume also has a rare talent for playing with synths & vocals samples and effects. The diversity of his compositions are simply stunning, on a track he will morph into UK deep dubstep producers like Mount Kimbie, Disclosure or Machinedrum, the next he will have crossed the Atlantic to wear the costumes abstact beats/chillwave artists like Shlohmo or Toro Y Moi.

Probably one of the richest electronic music album of the year !

Pour finir un morceau de choix avec le très attendu premier album du jeune prodige australien Flume.
Après avoir commis le prometteur Sleepless EP, il confirme toutes les attentes avec un premier album éponyme faisant exploser les frontières entre slo-mo house, abstract beats ou uk bass music.
Expert dans l'art d'inventer les lignes rythmiques les plus audacieuses, il excelle aussi lorsqu'il s'agit d'imaginer  puis de retravailler une multitude de samples vocaux ou de synthés. A la clé une diversité sonore réjouissante qui reflète un producteur insaisissable, sachant tantôt revêtir la casquette d'un artiste de house/dubstep anglais façon Mount Kimbie, Disclosure or Machinedrum, tantôt celle d'un as du chillwave ou de l'abstract beat californien (Shlohmo, Toro Y Moi..).
Un des albums electro les plus riches de l'année !

V4YS EP Review - Mitzi - Who Will Love You Know (Future Classic Recordings)

Let's go on with more Future Classic Recordings gems ! Here is a new single from indie synth-pop duo Mitzi.

Their 2011 EP Vinyl Versions featured the sublime track India, which has never left my DJ laptop since then. They're now finally back with Who Will Love You, a powerful new single that probably won't leave it either !

Heavy beats, melancholic vocals and a beautiful synth-led melodies makes it a new winner !





On continue avec les perles australiennes de Future Classic et un nouveau single du duo indie/synth-pop Mitzi.
Leur maxi Vinyl Versions et notamment le morceau India n'a pas quitté mes DJ sets depuis sa sortie en 2011. Ils sont enfin de retour avec Who Will Love You, single imparable porté par des beats soyeux, des nappes de synthés qui réchauffent et des vocals planant juste à la bonen hauteur.

V4YS EP Review - Panama - It's Not Over EP (Future Classic)

You're in for a triple post highlighting three new brillant releases from one of my favorite independant electro-pop/nudisco label, Sydney-based Future Classic Recordings !

Let's start with australian band Panama. The quartet started to make a name for itself earlier this year with a beautiful remix album of selected Bon Iver's songs (free dwld here). They subsequently gained a wider reach thanks to the joyful house/pop track Magic, which is part of Its Not Over, their first formal EP.

Evoking an 80's Depeche Mode-like sound but also The XX, their electro/indie touch is minimalist at times, amazingly warm and cheerful at others. A sure add to your watchlist !

C'est parti pour un "hat-trick" de posts consacrés à d'excellentes nouveautés du label australien Future Classic Recordings, que je considère comme l'un des meilleurs labels indépendants electro-pop/nudisco du moment.

On commence avec le quatuor Panama. Le groupe de Sydney a commencé à se faire un nom en début d'année grâce à son joli album de remix consacré à Bon Iver (free dwnload ici). Ils ont ensuite confirmé avec le superbe single indie/house Magic, qui est d'ailleurs repris dans ce premier vrai maxi intitulé Its Not Over.
Evoquant des sonorités 80's façon Depeche Mode et un univers electro/indie à la The XX, leur son oscille entre rythmiques minimalistes et passages chaleureux où des nappes de claviers euphorisantes ravagent tout sur leur passage. Un bien joli canal sur lequel il fait bon voguer...

Derrick Hodge feat. Common - We Live Today

Let's stay in the fantastic Blue Note galaxy with this first beautiful extract from Derrick Hodge forthcoming LP  Living Today that will be relased in the Spring of 2013.

An amazing double-bass & bass player and a pillar of Robert Glasper's Experiment and trio formations, Derrick has been working for quite some time on this debut solo LP. There will be some usual suspects on it (Robert Glasper of course, but Experiment's drummers Chris Dave and Mark Colenburg) as well as some high-profile vocalist like Common.

Judging by the sound of this first track, this should be a highlight of 2013 !

V4YS Concert Review - José James - Live At New Morning (Paris) - 071112

After his recent visit to Paris on a trio format in the intimate Duc Des Lombards Jazz Club, José James was back last wednesday on the hotter New Morning to officially present his forthcoming LP No Beginning, No End to be released January 22nd on Blue Note.


Touring with his quatuor (among which his inseparable drummer Richard Spaven & Japanese trumpet player Takuya Turoda) he is now also playing a bit of acoustic guitar as if his vocal talent was not enough !

Echoing his previous Blackmagic tour, this new set-up is a perfect bridge between the world of Jazz, classic Soul and 90's Jazzy Hip-Hop.

Focusing on his exciting new album, this breathless 2h30 gig also hinted at some of his musical heroes, like Bill Withers or Al Green in the form of beautiful covers.

It may get a little repetitive to regular readers of this blog, but I'm gonna say it again : José is one of the defining singer of his time !

Vibes4YourSoul Loves Edits#11 - Nina Simone - See Line Woman (Ogris Debris Edit)

See Line Woman from Nina Simone has been remixed several times by legendary house producers like Master At Works or Kenny Chandler, whose beautiful reworks are classic Ny-style soulful deep house tracks.

Here comes a new version from austrian duo Ogris Debris who take a different approach, bringing a "jazzanova-like" electro sound, while keeping the soulful touch thanks to splendid vocals taken from a Nina Simone's 1988 live performance in Hambourg.

V4YS Album Review - Submotion Orchestra - Fragments (Exceptional Records)

Leeds-based combo Submotion Orchestra's first album Finest Hour was one of my 2011 favorite picks. The band is already back with Fragments, a second LP enabling them to dig further into their original siganture blending lush nu-jazz atmospheres to electronic bass music.

An impressive orchestration putting more emphasis on deep electronic sounds & keyboards and an even stronger role devoted to singer Ruby Wood, whose voice definitily rhymes with purity, makes this second LP a brillant confirmation. Next to Cinematic Orchestra, northern England has definitilly infanted a second blazing fururistic jazz band !

They're currently touring England, I hope they'll soon be crossing the channel, in the meantime please find below a streaming of my favorite track, Thinking as well as an Album preview :






Leur premier album Finest Hour fut l'un de mes coups de coeur de 2011. Le combo de Leeds Submotion Orchestra est déjà de retour avec un second album qui sonne comme une confirmation de leur immense talent. 
Fidèle à un son novateur brouillant les pistes entre nu-jazz et influences de la bass music londonienne, ils poussent plus loin les expérimentations dans Fragments. Orchestration mettant l'accent sur les sonorités électro et les claviers numériques et leadership encore plus affirmé de l'exquise chanteuse Ruby Wood permettent au groupe de nous emmener dans un univers à la fois classieux et chaleureux. 
Actuellement en tournée en Grande-Bretagne j'espère qu'ils franchiront rapidement la Manche pour nous présenter ce joli disque en live.
