Robert Glasper Experiment - Live In Paris, La Cigale (130314)

Disclaimer: no, this blog is not dedicated to the genius of Robert Glasper and his Experiment crew, even though I acknowledge the regular posts I write to highlight their work may be misleading. But hey, they simply deserve the love!

So here is another quick post on Robert, Derrick Hodge, Casey Benjamin and Mark Colenburg to mention their latest beautiful live act in Paris last Thursday. Centered around the recent Black Radio 2 LP, this gig also gave them the opportunity to share the stage with another high profile voice of the R&B scene, Raheem DeVaughn.

If their wicked Jazz/Soul/Groove recipe is now well known, they somehow keep making it tastier. Starting with stunning versions of their brilliant studio compositions, adding some massive classic jazz/soul roots tributes (Bill Withers' Lovely Day cover), having fun revisiting some contemporary electro/pop tunes (Daft Punk's Get Lucky got jazzier once again) or offering an ultra-groovy version of Raheem DeVaughn's hit Woman.

So I'm afraid I'm not done harassing you with the Glasper galaxy anytime soon...but I'm sure these little video extracts will help explain my musical obsession!

The Peter Edwards Trio - Safe And Sound

While recommending you UK jazz singer Zara McFarlane latest LP a few weeks ago, I mentioned the impressive contribution of a young pianist named Peter Edwards. Now making a name for himself, Peter's trio is releasing on March 31st a radiant debut LP, Safe and Sound.

If you're into energetic and soulful jazz, then this one is for you. Supported by a hectic rhythmic section (Max Luthert on bass, Moses Boyd on drums), Peter gives full sway to his flamboyant, albeit delicate, piano play. Get ready for some furious swings!

Il y a quelques semaines, au détour d'un billet vous recommandant chaudement le second album de la chanteuse nu-jazz britannique Zara McFarlane, j'y soulignais notamment la contribution remarquable du jeune pianiste Peter Edwards. Je ne savais alors pas qu'il nous réserverait rapidement d'autres très jolies surprises! Fin mars sortira en effet Safe And Sound, premier album rayonnant, en formation trio.

Si vous appréciez le Jazz soulful qui swingue, alors ne passez pas à côté de ce petit bijou. Soutenu par une section rythmique survitaminée (Max Luthert à la basse, Moses Boyd à la batterie), Peter laisse libre cours à un jeu de piano à la fois flamboyant et délicat.

Franklin - If I Was A Wolf EP (Plug Research & Wool Recordings)

Paris-based Franklin (aka Frank Rabeyrolles and Lockhart) are responsible for this promessing electro/pop EP, that surely acts as a succesful teaser for their upcoming debut LP in May.

Pharrell Williams - Happy (Speedometer Cover)

I had lost track somehow of UK soul/funk band Speedometer these last three years. Well, no doubt they're still busy groovin' things up out there, judging by the rejoicing cover of Pharrell Williams' planetary hit they just released on their usual Freestyle Records label!

K15 - The Black Tape (INI Movement Music)

Here are some new great jazzy abstract beats from London-based producer K15.

Hazy synths layers, relaxing beats, cosy bass lines, ultra-smooth keyboards melodies, and K15' production talent make The Black Tape his most accomplished work to date.

Lost somewhere between Jay Dilla's and Flying Lotus worlds, this new EP can actually be found on Amsterdam cool alternative music platform INI Movement.

It's always very tricky to play with Michael's legacy...but when a talented producer like The Reflex takes up the challenge, magic can be around the corner. I'm sure you'll find some in his absolutely fantastic remake of one of my top 3 MJ songs, Rock With You.

Josh Osho - Roadsigns EP

In the wake of Michael Kiwanuka or more recently Ady Suleiman, here is another young UK songwriter nicely filling the dots between the world of folk and soul music.

After L.I.F.E., his first LP out in 2012, Roadsigns EP is Josh Osho second release. Four nicely crafted songs, where he displays his delicate acoustic guitar sound, his truly moving singing. as well as resonating poetic lyrics.

A sweet discovery to be checked out live this month in Paris, Lyon and Nice.

The Notwist - Close To The Glass (City Slang Records)

Probably my favorite pop/folk LP of this start of year, Close To The Glass is German band The Notwist' 6th LP.

Out now on Berlin-based label City Slang, it blends melancholic acoustic melodies to stronger pop anthems, all framed in poetic orchestrations. A cohesive album ticking all my indie boxes!

Sans aucun doute l'une de mes productions indie/folk favorite de ce début d'année, le sixième album du groupe allemand The Notwist allie avec beaucoup de délicatesse les passages acoustiques mélancoliques aux titres euphorisants franchement indie/rock. Orchestration recherchée, mélodies superbes, ce Close To The Glass est une pépite à découvrir d'urgence.
